Description

Roswell Park Care Network is looking to hire a Histotech for our Pathology Lab located in Depew, NY .




The Histotechnologist will accurately prepares tissues for microscopic review; performs frozen specimen sectioning, if necessary with appropriate training; grosses small specimens; embeds blocks, cuts slides, stains slides with special stains, including immunohistochemistry; accessions, processes, and routes laboratory testing material to the appropriate testing area; transcribes, prints, sorts, mails, and faxes laboratory reports; handles requests for laboratory reports, specimen tracking, and laboratory requests via phone, email, mail, and other correspondence methods; assists with the performance of laboratory quality control, equipment maintenance, and quality assurance activities; maintains laboratory supply inventories and processes requests for supply orders; training of new employees. 



Brief Description of Duties:

     

  • Correctly logs all patient and specimen
  • Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages and provides   routine information to parties requesting services from the clinical   laboratories.
  • Transcribes, prints, sorts, mails, faxes, duplicates and   distributes various medical reports, records, files, forms, correspondence, proposals, charts and other items for the organization.
  • Obtains required Release of Information signatures for external routing of laboratory reports/materials as necessary.
  • Follow Laboratory and RPCI Oncology PC Policy
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Shares appropriate communication with other personnel
  • Assists other laboratory personnel when necessary
  • Data entry and processing specimens including labeling, accessioning, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order
  • Package testing material for delivery to the appropriate internal and external testing laboratory, ensuring compliance with required  HIPAA and de-identification requirements; packages diagnostic specimens for external shipment in accordance with regulatory shipping requirements.
  • When necessary, packages, tracks and receives materials for courier transport between laboratory, reference laboratory and Pathologist offices.
  • Perform departmental-related clerical duties when assigned such as data entry, inventory, stock supplies, and answer phones when needed.
  • Read, understand and comply with Laboratory and RPCI Oncology PC  policies, protocols and procedures: (i.e. Procedure Manuals, Safety Manual,  Compliance Manual, Automobile Policies and Procedures, Employee Handbook, Quality Assurance Manual); and ensure that all staff members follow instructions.
  • Perform verification of patient demographic info. 
  • Ability to provide quality, error free work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal on-site supervision.
  • Flexible and available based on staffing needs.
  •  Performs and documents preventive maintenance and performs and documents QC and remedial action.
  • Handles pathology/laboratory specimens utilizing appropriate  blood/body fluid precautions
  •  Performs gross dissection of small tissue and biopsy specimens  with appropriate training and oversight by Pathologist(s).
  • Perform frozen specimen sectioning, including Mohs sections, if necessary with appropriate training.
  •  Retrieves tissue from gross room after it been cut; loads and starts tissue processor; unloads and flushes tissue processors; records numbers of blooks processed; embeds tissues into a paraffin blocks; cuts blooks using microtome to make slides; stains slides manually or on automated stainer.
  • Cuts slides from paraffin blooks; stains slides using specials   procedures, including tinctorial and immunochemistry stains, as requested and available in the lab.
  • Processes all the correct documentation for Send-Out specimens. 
  • Training of new employees or students.
  • Ability to resolve interdepartmental issues in a professional  manner while prioritizing patient needs.
  • Assists in the training and education of employees/ students to explain and demonstrate standard operating procedures.
  • Performs gross dissection of biopsy specimens.
  • Perform frozen specimen sectioning
  • Cleans glassware.
  • Files blocks.
  • Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs.
  • Provides input to enhance standard operation procedures.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Files and removes laboratory testing material from physical   inventory locations; maintains the integrity of the physical/electronic  inventory for retrieval and chain of custody of stored material.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Requirements
  • Associates degree or; 
  • B.S. Medical Technology or in any related discipline required
  • Current License or permit to practice as a certified Histological Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York;

OR

  • Eligible for licensure as a certified Histological Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York.


The preferred candidate will have experience with standard Histology procedures, special stains, IHC's and  other relevant experience/skills.
