Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Systems Engineer to provide advanced support, routine maintenance, and optimization for core services, servers, and virtual machines. This role involves complex problem-solving, script development, comprehensive documentation, and mentoring of junior staff. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the Windows operating system, Active Directory, Linux, and AWS, and a strong background in troubleshooting problems and maintaining large-scale virtualized environments. The role is ‘hands-on’ and will require an individual who can learn and adapt to new technologies. You will be expected to understand and adhere to best practices during planning and day-to-day execution of operations. The Systems Engineer reports to the Operations Manager and is an Operations team member.
Responsibilities:
- Advanced Support: Provide escalated support for on-prem compute infrastructure, virtual servers, and other IT systems. Address complex technical issues in collaboration with Storage, Network, and Application Engineers. Provide secondary support for storage and network platforms.
- System Provisioning: Provisioning virtual servers in both on-prem and public cloud infrastructure and fulfilling other service requests as needed. Configuration of deployed server hardware as designed by the infrastructure team.
- System Management: Enhance the security, reliability, and performance of systems through regular updates, vulnerability remediation, and ensuring system uptime. Perform upgrades and other maintenance tasks during scheduled maintenance windows following a change management process.
- Software Installation: Installation of software on servers or virtual desktop environments as required following standard processes and procedures.
- Ticket Resolutions: Responding to ticket escalations, working tickets through resolution, regularly updating tickets with status, following ticket hand-off procedures, and escalating tickets to senior team members when required.
- Technology Oversight: Monitor and manage technology platforms including System Center, AWS EC2, Active Directory, and others encompassing configuration, installation, and patching.
- Script Development: Develop and execute PowerShell or bash scripts for system management or report generation with on-prem and cloud infrastructure.
- Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation such as FAQs, Knowledge Base articles, troubleshooting guides, and SOPs.
- Training & Mentoring: Mentor junior staff and provide training to enhance their skills in managing complex issues.
- Flexible Role Adaptation: Adapt to various assigned duties in evolving technology scenarios.
- Alerts and On-Call Rotation: Respond to critical alerts during the working day, and after hours per published on-call rotation schedule.
Minimum Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Certifications: CompTia, Microsoft, AWS certification, or equivalent experience.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in IT, or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in IT or eDiscovery.
Technical Skills:
- Storage working knowledge of server and desktop virtualization, Microsoft Hyper-V, and public cloud environments such as AWS.
- Strong working knowledge of major server operating systems including Windows Server editions and Linux distributions.
- Strong working knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policies.
- Strong working knowledge of PowerShell scripting and/or bash scripting.
- Working knowledge of networking configurations, firewall policies and rules.
Preferred Requirements:
- Certifications: ITIL v3 or ITIL v4 Foundations certification. AWS Associate certification.
- System Troubleshooting: Proficiency with network and storage systems.
- Scripting Skills: Proficiency in Python, Ansible, Terraform or similar scripting and DevOps tools.
Job Requirements:
- Practical understanding of information technology concepts, protocols, industry best practices and ITIL processes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail
- Ability to work under minimal supervision and under your own initiative.
- Ability to collaborate with other teams across multiple time zones and geographies.
