Description

Job Summary

Under direct supervision, coordinates, verifies, and records incoming merchandise and/or materials that come to the yard. The employee will assure that products/materials are loaded in a safe manner for transport/securement while following all Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines and regulations while adhering to regulations identified by State agencies to allow for proper permitting and lawful transport. Additionally, the employee will provide support to customers with shipping and storage inquiries.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates forklifts and pallet jacks used in loading and unloading products/materials. Will also operate passenger vehicles.
  • Runs a power washer and lawn maintenance equipment occasionally.
  • Inspects equipment that includes structures and/or materials, finds causes and errors, along with other problems or defects.
  • Performs physical activities that require the use of arms and legs such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
  • Secures all loads according to standard protocol using chains, binders, straps, bungee cords, and tarps.
  • Serves as a rigger, signalman, or crane setup assistant as needed.
  • Assists customers with equipment being stored and coordinates the delivery.
  • Coordinates with dispatch on equipment being loaded and delivered accurately.
  • Organizes products/materials to assure proper precautions are used to protect them from damage from the environment, equipment used in loading and unloading procedures, and securement devices.
  • Maintains a clean and well-organized work area to include the yard, warehouse, and Company equipment.
  • Demonstrates professional conduct while having direct contact with all customers—paying, public, and company employees.
  • Performs related assignments as required.
Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of the practices, methods, and materials used to manage the flow of incoming and outgoing merchandise and materials; DOT rules and regulations regarding loading and securement of products/materials for safe transport; and proper use of forklifts, pallet jacks, and other equipment used in the loading and unloading of products/materials. Must have strong computer skills: Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Ability to read blueprints is useful; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to lift and carry heavy equipment up to 50 pounds; and good physical condition. Must be highly motivated and able to prioritize multiple tasks and to meet deadlines. Ability to work under pressure effectively with strong organizational skills. Demonstrates strong customer focus skills, teamwork, and communication skills. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills.


Education, Training, and Experience

Completion of ninth grade required. High school diploma or GED preferred. Possession of a valid Maryland Class C driver’s license or equivalent. Experience in shipping, logistics, or manufacturing and operation of a forklift. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform in the position may be considered.


Special Requirements

  • Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes, and airborne particles with a moderate noise level.
  • Possible extended workdays and long hours.
  • Wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and able to function at a high level as part of a team.
  • Must be able to pass a background check, drug test, and DOT physical.
