Position Summary

University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture & Community Development (SACD) is seeking applicants interested in joining our talented and collegial faculty in a full-time tenure-track position at the level of Assistant or Associate professor.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


1. Directing the Community Development Department which includes the Master of Community Development degree program

  • Guide Curriculum: Guiding and developing the Master of Community Development curriculum and scheduling courses (36 credits).
  • Direct Faculty: Directing and organizing a diverse group of interdisciplinary faculty members
    (composed of fulltime faculty from within the university and adjunct faculty specific to the department) and engaging the Community Development Faculty Council.
  • Recruit Faculty: Recruiting adjunct faculty to maintain the quality and variety within the curriculum.
  • Mentor Students: Advising and mentoring Master of Community Development students.
  • Recruit Students: Recruiting and facilitating the admissions process for Master of Community
    Development students.
  • Engaging Advisory Council: Engaging the Community Development Advisory Council (composed of alumni and community development professionals/leaders).
  • Engage Alumni: Engaging community development alumni.
  • Design Outreach Strategies: Designing and developing outreach strategies and informational
    opportunities for the Master of Community Development program.
  • Develop Meaningful Collaborations: Developing and maintaining relationships as well as
    programmatic and engagement opportunities across the university, City of Detroit, and beyond.
  • Envision Future Opportunities: Envision future opportunities to broaden the Community Development Department beyond the Master of Community Development degree program.
  • Manage Budget: Managing the Community Development Department budget and grants.

2. Teaching in the community development curriculum with opportunities to connect and teach in our Bachelor of Science in Architecture and our accredited Master of Architecture programs.

Requirements


Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree, or JD degree or higher, and must have some previous teaching experience, within their area of expertise.


Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).


Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.


Licenses/Certifications

Licensure is desirable but is not required.

SACD is the only Detroit-based school with community development department, and is well known internationally for its long history of providing a social, economic and environment justice-driven and student-centered educational approach. The Master of Community Development is approaching its 20th anniversary. The School is also home to the Detroit Collaborative Design
Center (DCDC), a professional practice with full-time staff supported by student employees providing design, planning, and community engagement services to the non-profit community using a “teaching-hospital” model and uses a robust model of civic engagement.
