Salary: $40,000 - $50,000
Position Overview:
The Community Crime Prevention Coordinator will play a critical role in implementing YAMA’s innovative pilot project aimed at reducing retail theft, de-escalating violence, building trust, and fostering respect between bodega owners, staff, and the wider community. The Coordinator will work closely with key stakeholders, including bodega associations, violence interrupters, community members, local activists, clergy, and the NYPD, to create a safer, more inclusive environment in the neighborhoods served by YAMA.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Implementation & Coordination:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the crime prevention initiative, ensuring all program components are delivered effectively.
- Coordinate de-escalation training sessions for bodega staff and community members.
- Facilitate rapid incident response and violence prevention planning with relevant stakeholders.
- Organize and manage community-building events involving bodega owners, staff, community members, and law enforcement.
Community Engagement & Relationship Building:
- Serve as the primary liaison between YAMA, bodega associations, violence interrupters, local activists, clergy, and the NYPD.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with bodega owners, staff, and community members to foster trust and cooperation.
- Coordinate with violence interrupters and community leaders to address and mediate conflicts, promoting non-violent resolutions.
Social Media & Public Awareness Campaigns:
- Develop and implement a social media campaign to reduce stigma, bias, and xenophobia within the communities served.
- Collaborate with communications teams to create content that highlights the program’s goals and successes.
Data Collection & Reporting:
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of program interventions through data collection and analysis.
- Prepare regular reports on program progress, outcomes, and challenges, and present them to YAMA leadership and partner organizations.
Collaboration & Partnerships:
- Work with partners to ensure that the program aligns with broader community safety and violence prevention strategies.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, and training sessions to stay informed about best practices and new approaches in community crime prevention.
Crisis Management & Conflict Resolution:
- Respond to incidents of violence, hate crimes, or xenophobia with timely interventions that prioritize safety and de-escalation.
- Implement conflict resolution strategies that address the root causes of violence and mistrust within the community.
Additional Duties:
- Perform other duties as assigned by the COO to support the overall mission and objectives of YAMA.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in community organizing, crime prevention, or violence intervention.
- Strong understanding of issues related to retail theft, community violence, hate crimes, and xenophobia.
- Experience working with diverse communities, including immigrant populations.
- Excellent communication, mediation, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders and law enforcement.
- Proficiency in social media platforms and experience in managing public awareness campaigns.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Preferred Languages: Proficiency in Arabic or Spanish is highly desirable.
