POSITION SUMMARY:

The Barn Staff is responsible for the day-to-day care of Frost Valley YMCA’s Equestrian Center at our Main Camp or East Valley Ranch property. This person will be responsible for the daily care of 20-50 horses. This position is also responsible for upholding the daily equestrian schedule for guests and campers. During the spring and fall this position will assist with facilitating lessons and/or trail rides for the outdoor education and weekend groups that visit Frost Valley YMCA both at Main Camp and East Valley Ranch. As part of the Frost Valley staff team, this position may be required to assist with other programs as needed. This position requires you to live on-site to provide emergency care for horses. Housing is provided. This position requires weekend work.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Daily care of the horse herd including feeding & grooming 
  • Daily horse health checks, including fitness, attitude, and suitability
  • Daily turn in, feeding, and turnout of horses
  • Daily cleaning of the barn and all surrounding areas 
  • Field & fence maintenance including proper horse rotation for optimal grass growth
  • Display basic riding skills and knowledge of Western and/or English riding
  • Be able to mount and ride horses with assistance
  • Ability to teach riding lessons to beginner and intermediate riders
  • Complete and submit all required documentation including, but not limited to, daily reports, incident reports, vehicle logs, etc. in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the highest level of safety is always maintained
  • Create a safe and fun environment for campers participating in equestrian programs.
  • Commit to daily, hard physical labor and sometimes adverse weather conditions
  • Be physically fit and have the ability to lift 50 lb feed bags as well as hay bales
  • Have a strong work ethic and desire to work with horses and children
  • Participate as a positive role model in all YMCA activities and settings
  • Maintain a friendly, cooperative, and professional relationship with your staff members or outfitters.
  • Be a good role model for fellow staff and campers at all times. This includes modeling acceptable behavior, language, Frost Valley’s Core Values and outdoor standards.

  • Offer help and assist with any other duties as assigned for the success of Frost Valley.

PAY RATES: Hourly pay annualized $9,728+ (Fall, Winter, Spring weekends only) Meals provided, Lodging accommodations Friday evening to Sunday afternoon


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Minimum 1 year working in the equestrian industry, including teaching lessons and caring for horses
  • Previous experience working in a camp setting preferred but not required
  • Possess excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Be a strong leader and be able to work well with a team of others
  • Be able to multitask and handle pressure well
  • Enjoy working with teens, children, families, and other staff
  • Certified Horsemanship Association Certification (If the candidate does not hold this currently, they will be asked to successfully complete courses upon hire.)
  • CPR/First Aid Certification. (If the candidate does not hold this currently, they will be asked to successfully complete courses upon hire.)

  • The employee frequently is required to traverse rough terrain.
