WithersRavenel is recruiting an SUE Technician II to join the Geomatics Practice Area! 


An SUE Technician II (Subsurface Utility Engineering Technician) is responsible for gathering, interpreting, and documenting information related to underground utilities. The SUE Technician II will assist the SUE Party Chief with performing fieldwork to identify, mark, and document the location of underground utilities using equipment such as Electromagnetic (EM) and Ground Penetrating Radars (GPR).  The technician will work closely with other team members, including engineers and surveyors, to ensure accurate data collection and reporting. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of Sub-Surface Utility Engineering (SUE) and utility locating.   


Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Perform Sub-Surface Utility Engineering services for both internal and external clients as directed.   Utilize electromagnetic equipment, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other tools to accurately detect and locate underground utilities. 
  • Record and document the location, depth, and type of utilities found. Ensure data is accurate and complete for use in engineering and construction planning.  
  • Communicate regularly with SUE Party Chief, SUE Field Project Manager, and SUE Project Managers to ensure expectations and project tasks are met. 
  • Ensure that project tasks and data collection are completed with high quality, accuracy, and thoroughness to meet regulatory requirements of the company and client.   
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines while working in various field conditions, including near traffic, construction sites, and other potentially hazardous environments. 
  • Prepare company vehicle daily for field tasks with proper equipment and maintain a clean and organized vehicle.  
  • Occasionally interact with clients or property owners to explain the purpose of the work and address any concerns.

Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.  
  • 2+ years of progressive experience locating underground utilities with SUE equipment (GPR and EM). 
  • Proficient in and experienced with vacuum excavation techniques. 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret utility maps and drawings.    
  • Understanding of utility infrastructures. 
  • Valid Driver’s License with the ability to pass a MVR records check  
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make accurate and informed decisions. 
  • Good communication skills for interacting with team members, clients, and property owners. 

Working Conditions


Fieldwork in various settings, including urban, suburban, and rural areas. Exposure to weather conditions, traffic, and construction sites.  Flexibility to travel and stay overnight for certain out-of-town work.  


Physical Requirements


Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, walk long distances, and lift equipment as needed.  Physical stamina to perform manual tasks, including lifting, digging, and standing for extended periods. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly.
