Reports to: Assistant Superintendent

Job Summary: The District Truancy Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with state and local attendance laws within the Career Academy Network of Public Schools. This position addresses issues related to student absenteeism and truancy, conducts home and workplace visits, and collaborates with various state and local agencies to enforce attendance regulations and promote educational engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Regulatory Compliance: Operate under the direct supervision and control of the Assistant Superintendent, adhering to district-specific rules and guidelines.
  2. Office Maintenance: Maintain an operational office at a location designated by the Assistant Superintendent.
  3. Operational Availability: Remain on duty during school hours and additional times as required by the Assistant Superintendent to address truancy-related issues.
  4. Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintain accurate records and prepare reports as mandated by the state board to track attendance and truancy metrics.
  5. Community Outreach: Conduct home visits for students who are frequently absent, providing resources or addressing needs such as books, clothing, or parental support.
  6. Legal Enforcement: Initiate legal actions to enforce attendance laws as directed, and serve notices to parents of students who are illegally out of school.
  7. Workplace Inspections: Visit workplaces, particularly factories, to inspect and address the employment of underage children in violation of state labor laws.
  8. Truancy Prevention Programs: Implement and assess truancy prevention measures as required under state law IC 20-33-2.5.
  9. Collaborative Meetings: Annually meet with representatives from the Department of Child Services and the juvenile court to evaluate the effectiveness of truancy prevention initiatives.
  10. Policy Review and Development: Convene at least annually with the state attendance officer to review data, policies, and procedures, and to discuss potential legislative changes aimed at reducing absenteeism and enhancing school attendance.
  11. Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties necessary to ensure the comprehensive enforcement of relevant educational laws and policies.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in an educational or social services setting, with specific experience in truancy or attendance enforcement preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws regarding school attendance and child labor.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong organizational and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
