About the role
As the Chief Financial Officer, you will play a critical role in leading our organization's financial operations. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and in collaboration with the Chief Credit Officer (CCO) and General Counsel (GC), you will ensure that the organization's financial structures and functions support a sustainable financial model while mitigating organizational risk. You will oversee the development and implementation of financial strategies, directing a team focused on accounting, finance, budgeting, and capital planning. Your responsibilities will include architecting financial reporting mechanisms and tracking progress toward long-term organizational goals and strategies. This position requires a commitment to sustainable finance practices and a passion for making clean energy accessible to all.
In this role, you’ll primarily be responsible for
Strategic Planning & Leadership
- In partnership with the senior leadership team, develop the long-range financial strategy, financial models, benchmarks, and related system enhancements.
- Prepare the annual budget and reforecasts to meet strategic and financial objectives, working collaboratively across finance, operations, credit, and the leadership team.
- Provide timely, accurate financial reports, analysis of financial trends, and forecasting to assist the CEO and the Board.
- Prepare and present financial reports to the Board of Directors.
- Develop and enforce the organization’s internal control framework, in collaboration with the leadership team, and ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
- Manage banking and financial advisory relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to support financial sustainability.
- Advise on areas like product development, market expansion, and capital investments.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to the finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration and integrity.
Financial Management
- Function as the risk manager in implementing processes that prevent operational losses, grant and contract non-compliance.
- Provide oversight for and manage all budgets, forecasts, and internal financial plans and processes to ensure all federally funded grant programs meet the 2 CFR Part 200 requirements.
- Oversee financial reporting, general ledger management, loan accounting rules, cost accounting management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, tax compliance, and procurement.
- Support the financial close process, including preparing journal entries, schedules, and critical account analysis and reconciliations.
- Oversee all tax filings and compliance requirements, ensuring that the organization is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
- Manage relationships with external auditors and other financial service providers to ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare financial reporting to comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Standards (GAAP) and the Governmental Accounting Standard Board (GASB) pronouncements.
- Make decisions on how to allocate capital among various projects and investments to maximize returns and support the fund’s strategic goals.
Core qualifications
- 10+ years of management experience in financial management positions, with demonstrated excellence in managing finance, accounting, budgeting, and reporting responsibilities
- 5+ years’ experience with non-profit accounting and finance
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or relevant field
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Extensive track record of accounting and financial reporting, including fund and loan accounting
- Demonstrated expertise in financial, audit, compliance, and risk management
- Working knowledge of GAAP, GASB, and other authoritative pronouncements
- Demonstrated flexible and effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of stakeholders and levels of an organization
- Ability to work collaboratively, exercising good judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to achieve shared goals
- 2+ years’ experience leading a team
- Passion for clean energy and a commitment to advancing sustainability and environmental stewardship
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with federal grant management
- Experience with project finance accounting, tax credit finance, and capital stack modeling
- Certified Financial Planner (CFP)

What we offer
The expected annual salary range for this position is $170,000-$180,000, commensurate with qualifications and location. We offer competitive benefits, including 100% comprehensive health care coverage for employees (medical, dental, and vision), at least 90% employer contribution toward health care coverage for dependents; work-from-home reimbursements (internet, phone, office set up), up to 3% employer match to 401K, 14 paid holidays plus 3 weeks of vacation, 5 sick days, and paid parental and caregiver leaves.
This role is a remote opportunity and open to applicants across the United States, with a preference for those based in the communities we serve. Currently, we have team members in Houston and Austin. Occasional travel will be required for meetings, conferences, and other external engagements.
