Summary 

 

**We are seeking candidates who are based in the Eastern Time Zone (ET) to ensure alignment with our team's needs and regional collaboration. This allows for smoother coordination across projects and teams.** 

  

We are seeking a skilled and strategic Engineering Manager who is passionate about building and mentoring high-performing development teams with a focus on Node.js and JavaScript technologies. In this role, you will work closely with cross-functional teams of engineers, product owners, and quality assurance to grow and enhance Intellum’s platform. Your primary responsibility will include overseeing your team's delivery, supporting the professional development of team members, and ensuring that technical decisions prioritize JavaScript and Node.js expertise while maintaining high-quality standards.


The Engineering Manager ensures that teams effectively prioritize and sequence their work, balancing multiple demands such as product and technical roadmaps, security, and bug fixes. You will be responsible for aligning team efforts with business goals and ensuring continuous value delivery. In addition to project delivery, a deep technical focus on Node.js, JavaScript, and related technologies will be central to this role.


You will provide technical leadership, guiding the team in making informed decisions around JavaScript frameworks and Node.js architecture. This includes ensuring that solutions are scalable, maintainable, and performant, as well as fostering a positive team culture.


Responsibilities    

  • Prioritization: Balance and sequence work, including product and technical roadmaps, security, and bug fixes. Make informed decisions on prioritization, ensuring alignment with business objectives and transparency with stakeholders.
  • Delivery: Drive the end-to-end delivery of projects, ensuring that the team is sustainably delivering business value while maintaining a focus on long-term quality and system performance. Manage releases and oversee effective monitoring and measurement.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure high standards in the team's technical output. Review technical specifications and challenge engineers on whether their approaches are scalable, maintainable, and well-architected. Provide technical feedback to help guide solutions.
  • Focus and Efficiency: Maintain focus within the team by removing distractions, managing dependencies, and ?nalizing work. Avoid spreading the team too thin by ensuring focused efforts and closing projects efficiently.
  • Accountability and Timeliness: Hold the team accountable for their commitments, ensuring work is completed within set timeframes. Support decision-making around tradeoffs to stay on schedule and within budget.  
  • Team Wellbeing and Functioning: Ensure your team is well-staffed, engaged, and functioning effectively. Foster a positive and inclusive environment, coach team members for professional growth, and promote continuous learning opportunities.
  • Alignment: Ensure your team understands how their work ties into broader company objectives.  Set and track measurable goals that align with both the engineering department and company-wide goals.
  • Communication: Effectively communicate status updates, blockers, and priorities with stakeholders. Be transparent in progress reporting while maintaining good judgment about what should be escalated versus handled internally.
  • Stakeholder Management: Partner with key stakeholders to provide timely updates on the work that matters to them. Ensure clear expectations are set and met, building trust through regular updates and transparent communication.
  • Engineering Leaders Council: Actively participate in the Engineering Leaders Council to contribute to broader organizational discussions, support initiatives outside your team’s scope, and drive collaborative leadership.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and coach a team of engineers in both their professional and personal development. Conduct regular 1:1s, provide continuous feedback, and support the team’s goals.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Product team to review pitches, and partner with other Engineering Managers and Directors to ensure best practices are followed in technology selection and product development.

Qualifications  

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related field.
  • 4-5+ years of relevant engineering work experience, with a focus on Node.js and JavaScript.
  • 1-2 years of management experience, with remote team management a plus.
  • Experience with programming languages and technologies including: HTML, JavaScript, CSS, React, Rails/Node, Postgres/MongoDB.
  • Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, microservices architecture, and scalable back-end services built with Node.js.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of translating technical insights into business implications with the ability to communicate business insights and implications to non-technical parties.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote-based, diverse team environment.
