Adapted Group Fitness Instructor

Description

 

  • Implement group fitness programs for individuals with and without disabilities, making adaptations and modifications when needed
  • Design, adapt and modify 45-60 minute therapeutic group fitness classes to meet participants' needs
  • Ability to manage group dynamics to ensure program success and safety of participants 
  • Ensures participants' safety during group fitness sessions; follows health and safety policies, anticipates hazards, and takes appropriate measures
  • Consult with supervisor regarding participant needs and adaptations as needed 
  • Documents participant progress in group fitness programs through daily group notes completed according to Rec2connect standards with prompt and narrative data
  • Provides emotional support to participants and families when needed
  • Provides a positive, supportive atmosphere during programming 
  • Encourages participant involvement in group programming and provides necessary support to facilitate involvement through various levels of prompting 
  • Participates in quality improvement projects
  • Works to promote a positive, professional image of Rec2Connect to outside organizations
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-services as assigned
  • Develops and promotes positive working relationships within the agency
  • Performs related duties as assigned
Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES 

  • Proficient understanding of body mechanics or exercise sciences 
  • Ability to adapt and modify exercises and activities to meet the needs and functions of a diverse population of people with and without disabilities 
  • Ability to observe participants' behaviors and develop behavior modification plans as needed
  • Basic understanding of Applied Behavior Analysis and how to integrate into programming
  • Fundamental knowledge of therapeutic principles and practices and the effects on participants' functioning
  • Basic knowledge of disability diagnosis, conditions and limitations as it relates to exercise and participation in programs  
  • Ability to relate in a warm, caring, and professional manner to participants with multiple needs
  • Ability to produce and maintain accurate records and reports
  • Ability to plan and lead a variety of group fitness programs 
  • Ability to observe and document participants' progress
  • Proficient understanding and adherence of Rec2Connect policies and procedures 
  • Ability to delegate necessary tasks to team members
  • Ability to manage conflict and execute resolutions 
  • Demonstrate proficient written and oral communication skills 
  • Demonstrate highly effective interpersonal skills 
  • Demonstrate effective leadership skills 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a four year bachelor’s degree program in exercise science, therapeutic recreation, adapted PE, intervention specialist, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, psychology, or related fields.  
  • Therapeutic certification/license or similar education and experience
  • Preference- Applicants who demonstrate possession of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least two years of experience performing tasks similar to those assigned to the position

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Ohio driver’s license 
  • CPR certification, required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ability to lift 25 lb and other recreational equipment
  • Ability to provide physical and verbal prompting when needed for up to 1 hour continuously 
  • Ability to demonstrate exercise and movements for clients for up to 1 hour continuously

  • Dependent upon experience.
