MNS is hiring a GIS Associate to join our team. This position will have a hybrid work schedule with three days in office near the San Bernardino metro station and two days remote from home.
MNS Engineers is seeking a solutions focused, results-oriented GIS Associate to support efforts in San Bernardino. Reporting to the Community Planning Practice Lead, the GIS Associate will be responsible for representing MNS independently while working directly with a client to perform technical and professional work in support of Geographic Information System (GIS) programs. They will need to collaborate with staff to analyze and discuss GIS requests and needs (generating maps, reports, and related graphic materials), maintain GIS databases, and maintain GIS-based transportation models. This position will receive general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel from both MNS and our client, and will not have supervision over staff.
The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills and be able to work independently exercising independent judgment and initiative. They will also need to have a strong passion and drive for client service.
- Provide graphic support for departments and projects by gathering, analyzing, and integrating geospatial data to create and design a variety of maps, exhibits, and other graphic materials.
- Receive and respond to user requests for technical assistance. Evaluates and defines data needs, project requirements and objectives, and desired output in consultation with end users to develop graphic materials.
- Maintain, update, create, and acquire internal and external GIS data; create and maintain data warehousing and data mining systems; configure and maintain database library; ensure data integrity during integration with other IT systems and databases when importing, exporting, versioning, and maintaining the GIS library structure and geo-database conversions; make recommendations for data standardization and normalization.
- Maintain and administer GIS database, GIS-based transportation models, and related applications.
- Ensures adherence to quality standards based on industry standards and evaluation of available technology and resources.
- Explains technical information to system users including assisting them in accessing and interpreting GIS information; and providing training to users and advises on best practices.
- Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in technology related to GIS; researches, evaluates, tests, and recommends vendor solutions and technologies; implements improvements upon approval.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- GIS concepts and analytical techniques, including computerized mapping and digital data conversion, manipulation, and analysis.
- Operational characteristics of a diverse range of GIS systems and tools.
- Technology, hardware and software, and platforms related to GIS systems – ARC Software experience preferred.
- Methods and techniques of relational database management.
- Record keeping principles and procedures.
- Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations as well as industry standards and best practices pertinent to the assigned area of responsibility.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service, by effectively working with vendors.
- Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.
Ability to:
- Create, manipulate, and maintain a comprehensive library of spatial data tables and layers.
- Create and modify maps, plans, and illustrative graphics using GIS.
- Perform analyses of GIS informational requirements and needs; identify, evaluate, and solve GIS problems; implement new, enhanced, or modified tools and applications.
- Maintain and administer GIS database and GIS-based transportation models.
- Understand, interpret, apply, and explain applicable federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
- Establish and maintain a variety of filing, record keeping, and tracking systems.
- Use tact, initiative, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines and legal requirements.
- Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in geographic information systems, geography, computer science, transportation, urban planning or related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in performing GIS analysis and/or transportation modelling.
- Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise, Pro, and Desktop Software.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License and proof of automobile liability insurance by time of appointment.

Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions:
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing policies and procedures. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds.
Pay Range: $38.00 - $50.00/hour (*$80,000-$104,000/year), Full-time
*Based on a 2080 annual work year
