Description

Linda Hall Library, one of the world’s foremost independent research libraries devoted to science, engineering, and technology, is seeking a contract Interpretive Writer to play a critical role in the first phase of interpretive planning and exhibition development for the Library’s 2025 fall exhibition. 


Project Timeline: Mid-October – January (approximately 12 weeks) 

Project Hours: 10 hours per week (totaling 120 hours)

Pay Rate: $40 - $60 per hour, depending on experience and expertise


PURPOSE 

Working closely with the Vice President and the project team, the Interpretive Writer will develop exhibition goals, outcomes, and themes, research assigned topics relevant to the exhibit, and assist in writing the first draft of an exhibition interpretive plan and research summary report.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Collaboration: Work closely with the Vice President and project team to advance the required planning documents of the first phase of exhibition development. 
  2. Research and Documentation: Conduct thorough research and maintain organized records of findings and drafts.
  3. Feedback and Revisions: Integrate input and feedback to advance research and summary reports; be flexible and willing to adjust methods and approaches as the team explores and defines the exhibition.
  4. Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned or requested to develop and advance the exhibition’s research and interpretive plan.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, the sciences, Public History, English, Communications, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in writing for exhibitions or other publications.
  • Proven experience in developing interpretive content for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough research and synthesize complex information into engaging narratives.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills. 
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to incorporate feedback from various stakeholders.

WORK LOCATION AND CONDITIONS

This position is based in Kansas City, Missouri. While partial onsite work is preferred, remote work options are available for highly qualified out-of-state candidates.
