Job Title: Shipyard Jr Inside/ Outside Manual Machinist

Reports to: Dock Master/Machinist Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY:
Experience in setting up and operating various manual machine tools to produce precision parts. Use of precision instruments and necessary hand tools to fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical parts. Must have knowledge of shipboard equipment operation, disassembly/assembly, testing and record keeping of work performed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Operate basic machining equipment such as lathes, mills, and drill presses under the supervision of experienced machinists.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics to understand project specifications.
- Measure and inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, and gauges to ensure accuracy and adherence to specifications.
- Assist in the setup and maintenance of machining equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace, following all safety protocols and procedures.
- Collaborate with the outside machinist, and frequent work is required on the vessel.
- Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot issues and improve manufacturing processes.
- Document work performed and maintain accurate production records.
- Knowledge of marine products, inventory control, equipment, and tools.
- Confer with managerial or technical personnel to resolve problems.
- Ability to operate, set up, and align various horizontal and vertical lathes, milling machines, boring machines, drill presses, band saws, grinding wheels, and all portable tools used in the trade.
- Ability to use precision measuring instruments such as gauges, calipers, layout tools, and various types of calibrators.
- Ability to shape metal parts to close tolerances and perform standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machines, fittings, and assembling parts into mechanical equipment.
- Secure the job site at the end of the shift to minimize the risk of loss or theft.
- Knowledge of how to properly handle and store all hazardous materials.
- Wearing the proper personal protective equipment.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety standards and industry codes.
- Other duties may be assigned.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
- While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear.
- Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist, and crawl.
- Frequent lifting of up to 20 lbs and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. The employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation.
- Enter and move through manholes to reach and work in confined spaces.
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
Experience:
- Manual machining: 2-3 years of shipyard experience/ heavy equipment mechanic
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; a technical degree or coursework in machining is a plus.
- Basic understanding of machining principles and practices.
- Familiarity with measuring tools and equipment is preferred.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and technical documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Good problem-solving skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Willingness to learn and take on new challenges.

Pay Rate:
- $30-$40/ hour
