The Security Manager will hold the primary responsibility for strategizing, developing, and managing the physical security operations of the Library. This encompasses safeguarding the premises, collections, staff, and patrons.
The incumbent will investigate and incorporate security and safety best practices and policies across various functional areas of the organization. This role necessitates collaboration with multiple departments, including Facilities, Collections and Public Services, IT, and Human Resources. The ultimate objective is to cultivate a safe and welcoming environment for all stakeholders associated with the Library.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Develop, implement, and communicate comprehensive security protocols for the Library.
- Proactively identify and mitigate potential threats to physical security, employee safety, and asset protection through regular security audits, inspections, and risk assessments.
- Act as the primary responder to internal and external security incidents and emergencies. Liaise with law enforcement and other external agencies as required.
- Enforce the Library’s Patron Code of Conduct and escort trespassers and other unwelcome parties off the premises.
- Conduct thorough investigations of security incidents, document findings, and maintain the incident reporting system. Collaborate with the HR department to respond to staff incidents with discretion.
- Conduct regular patrols and building sweeps to ensure the security of assigned areas.
- Administer and enforce practices and policies for physical security systems, including alarms, security cameras, and access control. Monitor alerts and system usage to ensure optimal performance and security compliance.
- Maintain and update security procedures and documentation. Stay informed about security trends and best practices and routinely recommend improvements and enhancements to the security function.
- Promote a culture of safety and security by providing ongoing security awareness training and education to staff. Develop a calendar of required safety drills for weather, fire, active shooter, and other emergency situations.
- Oversee the work of contracted security guards and manage multiple security vendors, including equipment services, ensuring compliance with policies and standards.
- Prepare and present detailed security reports and statistics to senior management and stakeholders.
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the Library.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent is responsible for liaising and overseeing the contracted security guards.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in security management, criminal justice, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of five years of experience in security management, preferably within a public-facing organization such as a library, museum, or educational institution.
- A Class B license with the City of Kansas City is required or must be obtained within the first 90 days of employment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of security principles, practices, systems, and technologies, evidenced by previous job experience, certifications, or training
- The ability to work a full-time schedule between 8:00 – 5:00 p.m., with flexibility for some evenings and weekends. This role may involve shift work or on-call duties.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications, such as security management systems or incident reporting software.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be eligible for coverage under the company’s insurance policy.
Desirable
- Experience protecting high-value cultural assets.
- Knowledge of best practices in emergency preparedness and response for cultural institutions such as libraries or museums is also preferred.
- Security specialist certification, such as Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or Physical Security Professional (PSP), is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience supervising employees or as a team lead.

Work is performed in an office setting and throughout the facility. Occasionally, the role may necessitate outdoor work, subject to weather conditions.
