About the Role:

As the Engineering Manager for the Platform Pod, you will balance hands-on coding with management responsibilities. This role requires a solid foundation in software engineering and experience managing small engineering teams. You will remove roadblocks, advocate for your team, and foster growth through mentorship and collaboration.

You will be a part of the Product, Design, and Engineering (PDE) team and will work closely with the VP of Engineering and Product team to design and develop systems that power Food52, Schoolhouse, and Dansk. Our stack includes Ruby on Rails, Next.JS, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, Elasticsearch, and Memcached. Technologies evolve constantly and we’re always interested in finding new ways to solve problems.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the codebase in a timely manner while managing engineering responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with the CTO and VP of Engineering to define, track, and achieve KPIs.
  • Manage and support a small engineering team through hiring, mentoring, and development.
  • Foster code quality through collaboration, reviews, and guidance. Facilitate code reviews to ensure well-tested and efficient solutions.
  • Monitor system performance and proactively address issues.
  • Design and plan features with cross-functional teams, focusing on reliability, security, and scalability.
  • Lead technical initiatives by working closely with key stakeholders and driving consensus.
  • Participate in cross-team planning meetings to align on priorities and resolve blockers and issues.
  • Offer constructive feedback and conduct regular 1:1s to encourage professional growth.
  • Track performance, identify bottlenecks, and support the team in meeting goals.
  • Assist with the preparation of technical specs and documentation.
  • Communicate clearly across teams to coordinate tasks, timelines, and risks.
  • Build trust through proactive communication and timely collaboration with business partners. Keep leadership updated on progress, challenges, solutions, and resource needs.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • 8+ years of combined experience in professional software development and leading engineering teams.
  • Strong background in backend web technologies ideally within an e-commerce environment, including experience integrating ERP systems, 3PLs, Braintree, and other supply chain services.
  • Expertise in back-end frameworks such as Ruby on Rails or Django.
  • Experience with Next.js and Sanity is a plus.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructures, including AWS and/or GCP.
  • Solid understanding of principles and best practices of software design, implementation, and deployment methodologies.
  • Proven experience in architecting and building scalable systems from the ground up and working collaboratively within a team to implement them.
  • Hands-on experience with a variety of AWS services and their integration.
  • Strong understanding in managing and leading third-party integrations, and representing engineering interests with external partners.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and processes.
  • Ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with stakeholders.

COMPENSATION

This is a salaried, exempt role with a hiring range of $155,000 - $190,000 per year.  This role is eligible for a bonus.
