Government Finance Officer’s Association is hiring a Government Accounting Intern for our Technical Services Center. The Technical Services Intern will work 20 hours or less a week. GFOA’s internship program provides an opportunity for undergraduate or graduate students with an interest in pursuing a career in local government or in an industry serving local governments to improve upon their knowledge/experience with public sector operations, develop network connections with GFOA members, and refine technical skills. Interns will be exposed to governmental accounting and financial reporting of state and local governments. Interns play a critical role in supporting various programs and services that GFOA offers.
Internship details may will include but are not limited to:
Eligibility Verification
- Check and verify eligibility for the Certificate of Achievement Program to ensure compliance with program requirements.
Financial Report Review
- Assist in reviewing state and local government’s Popular Annual Financial Reports for accuracy and adherence to standards.
- May analyze sections of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, focusing on the letter of transmittal and statistical section.
Ad Hoc Project Assistance
- Conduct research on specific topics as assigned to support various departmental initiatives.
- Prepare presentation slide decks for meetings and project updates.
- Contribute to the Technical Services Center Process Optimization project, assisting with documentation and implementation strategies.
Professional Development Opportunities
- Participate in reviewer meetings to discuss technical accounting issues and gain insights from experienced professionals.
- Attend training webinars offered by GFOA to enhance knowledge and skills in financial reporting and governmental accounting.

- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master's in Accounting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to review financial reports and conduct research effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey information clearly in reports and presentations.
- Ability to participate in discussions and articulate ideas during meetings.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to group projects.
- Openness to receiving feedback and participating in discussions on technical accounting issues.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Ability to prioritize work effectively in a dynamic environment.
- Willingness to engage in professional development opportunities, such as attending webinars and meetings.
- Interest in public accounting and/ or public finance.
- Previous internship or relevant coursework in accounting or finance is preferred but not required.
- Experience with financial software or accounting systems is a plus.
Work Environment
Remote; total of 20 hours or less a week.
Physical Requirements: Work is performed in an office environment. Must be able to travel short distances within office. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.?
