Position Title: Data Scientist/Software Developer
Position Summary: The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) mission is to safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values. This role will directly support DHS S&T’s System of Systems Operational Analytics (SoSOA) team, partnered with CBP’s Enterprise Analytics Division (EAD) to apply data science skills to build and develop models as well as conduct validation and verification (V&V) studies of existing models. The successful candidate in this role will have the skills to develop software to integrate multiple models, verify and validate current model performance, and develop new code to improve on current model performance.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but could serve as a coach and mentor for other personnel throughout the department.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Collect, analyze, and maintain data gathered to inform leadership development
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Demonstrated experience in:
o Maintaining and improving existing codebases
o Developing, testing, and implementing software systems including complex predictive models
o Analyzing, debugging, and testing software / complex predictive models
o Developing, coding, and validating machine learning algorithms
o Building, coding, and maintaining statistical modeling tools
o Building and maintaining data visualizations / analytic outputs to include knowledge of BI tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, and Qlik
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite software.
- Excellent interpersonal, counseling, and negotiation skills.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
Education and Experience:
- 2+ years of broad software development and data science experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Software Development or related field required, Master’s degree desired
- Knowledge of computer programming languages and Jupyter Notebooks
- Previous experience in capturing metrics and producing various employment reports
- Strong software development and modeling skills
- Experience building data visualization using BI tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, and Qlik

- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
