FT Optometry Faculty (12 month)
Position Summary
Participate in the delivery of didactic and/or clinical instruction at the School of Optometry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with University and program leadership to develop and establish a Doctor of Optometry program
- Provide professional optometric services that include comprehensive eye exams along with the diagnosis and management of ocular disease.
- Assist in development of materials and documentation required for accreditation by the ACOE
- Assist in developing the Detroit Mercy Eye Institute as an internal rotation site for optometry students and as a practice site for optometric program faculty
- Work collaboratively with clinic management to promote quality assurance, maintain financial stability, and advance process improvement.
- Contribute in the planning process for student recruitment
- Participate in accreditation meetings, site visits, and preparatory events
- Participate in the development and delivery of courses in the Doctor of Optometry curriculum
- Adopt and advance the mission and goals of the School of Optometry.
- Comply with organizational policies and procedures, including completion of required courses (e.g. FERPA and BLS training)
- Participate in training of student interns, including precepting, grading, and delivery of timely feedback
- Adhere to the principles of the American Optometric Association Code of Ethics
- Create and maintain supportive and professional relationships with faculty, students, and staff.
- Represent the School of Optometry at local and national meetings
- Active participation in state and national optometric organizations.
- Active participation in program and University committees to accomplish the goals of the Optometry program.
- Participate in White Coat Ceremony, student orientation, commencement events, and other activities as assigned by the Office of the Dean and Assistant Deans.
- Solicit feedback from students and colleagues to evaluate effectiveness in teaching
- Participate in preceptor conferences and in-service programs
- Maintain an active Michigan Optometry License
- Other duties as assigned or as needs arise relating to the effective implementation of the Optometry program.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education – A Doctor of Optometry degree from an ACOE accredited institution.
- Employment – Completion of an ACOE accredited residency or 5 years of clinical experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in educational assessment.
- Prior experience with learning management software.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Proofreading and research skills.
- Familiar with CompuLink EHR.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Attention to detail and the ability to work with a team in a fast-paced environment
- Exceptional organizational skills and an ability to meet deadlines in an efficient manner
- Computer proficiency, specifically with MS Office and aptitude to learn new computer applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to use independent judgment and maintain confidentiality
Physical Requirements
Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping.
Work Environment
Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
Licenses/Certifications
Licensed or eligible for optometry licensure in the State of Michigan.
