Description

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the VP of Manufacturing, the Environmental Specialist is responsible for evaluating current systems and designing innovative ways to modify or restructure manufacturing processes and methodologies with a focus on reducing harmful effects on the environment and the community. The Environmental Specialist will apply principles of engineering and organization to create sustainable, eco-friendly solutions to environmental challenges such as air and water pollution, recycling and waste management. The incumbent will work with Operations management to improve or replace existing systems or processes to ensure compliance with all applicable environmental rules and regulations. The incumbent will prepare and review environmental investigation reports so that documents and permits are updated and in compliance with environmental regulations and audit-ready at all times. Finally, the Specialist will ensure compliance with all Environmental regulations through direct action or coordination with and/or review of other functions’ responsibilities.


Essential Functions:

  • Monitors and ensures compliance with wastewater discharge permits, local and state environmental regulations (including California Water Boards), and other applicable wastewater regulations.
  • Performs routine inspections of wastewater systems to ensure proper functioning and compliance with company policies and regulatory standards.
  • Oversees the collection and testing of wastewater samples, reviewing results to ensure they meet regulatory requirements.
  • Prepares and submits required reports to regulatory agencies, including discharge monitoring reports and any compliance documentation.
  • Investigates, records and compiles reports for environmental-related complaints.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies in California, including but not limited to agencies such as the Air Quality Management District (AQMD), California EPA, and California Water Boards, etc.
  • Manages permits, certifications, and regulatory filings related to environmental compliance, ensuring timely renewals and adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Addresses regulatory inquiries, audits, and inspections, working closely with agencies to resolve issues and maintain positive relationships.
  • Stays updated on new regulations or changes in state and federal laws that may impact company operations.
  • Collects, analyzes, and manages environmental data and performs risk and quality control assessments.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of EHS policies and procedures that align with Company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in risk assessments, environmental audits, and incident investigations, contributing to corrective action planning.
  • Develops guidelines for the disposal of hazardous materials
  • Develops and facilitates EHS training programs, ensuring that employees are educated on wastewater compliance, safety practices, environmental protection measures, etc.
  • Maintains accurate records of all permits, inspection reports, regulatory correspondence, and other compliance-related documentation.
  • Tracks and manages waste manifests, ensuring accurate reporting and proper recordkeeping for hazardous waste and wastewater.
  • Supports Operations leadership in planning and organizing safety meetings, training sessions, and regulatory inspections.
  • Assists in preparing internal and external EHS reports, such as compliance metrics, risk assessments, and environmental impact summaries.
  • Works in concert with other functions to drive Continuous Improvement for the Environmental compliance of the Company.
Requirements

Required/Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED required; Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in an EHS role, with a focus on environmental compliance, wastewater management and/or dealing with required regulatory agencies in California.
  • Strong understanding of California environmental regulations (e.g., California Water Boards, California EPA, AQMD), Clean Water Act, and all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Experience with wastewater treatment systems and hazardous waste regulations required.
  • HAZWOPER Certification required.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite of products.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing with employees at all levels of the organization, contractors, vendors and regulatory agencies.
  • Prior use or experience with environmental management software a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Many of the job functions can be performed in an office setting requiring normal safety precautions, however a significant amount of time will be spent on the production floor and warehouse.
  • Ability to work in hot and cold ambient conditions.

Salary Description
$31.25 - $36.06 /hour DOE
