Description

Summary: Optometric Technician helps with the creation of lenses and construction of glasses. The position of an optometric technician is considered a paraprofessional role. Work is done under the supervision and guidance of an optometrist. The Optometric Technician will be responsible for tasks such as  assisting with patient eye care and examination, performing diagnostic tests, assisting in eye examinations, educating patients on eye care, handling some technical duties involving equipment and eyeglass preparation and maintaining medical records in the optometry setting. 


 Salary:  

$17.96/ hourly 

Hours of operation:

Monday-Wednesday 8:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.

Columbus, Ga; 


Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Patient care: Providing high-quality patient care, answering questions, and making patients feel comfortable 
  • Patient preparation: Taking patient histories, explaining exams, and performing pre-tests 
  • Testing: Performing diagnostic tests like visual field testing, retinal imaging, and tonometry 
  • Record keeping: Maintaining patient records and updating electronic health records 
  • Equipment maintenance: Cleaning and maintaining equipment and instruments 
  • Inventory: Ordering and maintaining supplies and contact lenses 
  • Customer service: Providing exceptional customer service to patients 
  • Front desk tasks: Registering new patients, scheduling appointments, handling insurance forms, accepting payments, and screening phone calls 
  • Contact lens assistance: Assisting with contact lens fittings and teaching patients how to use them 
  • Eyeglass repair: Fixing eyeglasses 
  • Educational programs: Teaching employees about eye safety

 

Optometric Technician Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • An Associate's degree as an optometric technician may be a benefit.
  • An optometric technician certification may be a benefit.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivation, and ability to work under pressure.

  6. Previous experience with electronic medical records preferred but required

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent
  2. 1+ years’ of experience as an optometric assistant/technician preferred, but not required

Security (HIPAA): Every employee is required to protect their computer log-on and password. You must secure your work area prior to leaving it unattended for an extended period of time. You are required to log-off of your computer and secure your work area prior to leaving at the end of the day. Physical Requirements: Varied activities include standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting. Employee must possess full range of body motion including the ability to assist or lift patients when necessary; occasional weight bearing to exceed 50 pounds, use of portable stretchers/wheelchairs encouraged. Employee must possess hand-eye coordination with normal range of vision and hearing abilities. This position frequently requires working under stressful conditions and frequently requires irregular work hours.

Environmental Working Conditions: This position includes both administrative and medical responsibilities. Employee is frequently exposed to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medical cleaning and processing solutions which my included ionizing radiation plus other elements common in a clinical environment.
