WithersRavenel is recruiting an SUE Project Manager to join our Geomatics Practice Area in Charlotte, NC!


The Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Project Manager is responsible for leading and managing subsurface utility engineering projects from initiation to completion, which involves coordinating with clients, overseeing field operations, managing project teams, and ensuring the delivery of accurate and timely utility information to support projects. The role requires excellent project management skills, technical knowledge in utility engineering, and the ability to deliver results within scope, budget, and schedule.  The Project Manager will act as the primary point of contact between clients, contractors, and internal teams.


Duties and Responsibilities


Project Management

  • Lead, manage, and deliver multiple SUE projects from initiation to completion, including scoping, planning, scheduling, budgeting, and quality control.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to allocate resources effectively.
  • Ensure timely and accurate project deliverables.
  • Manage change orders and address any project scope changes with clients.

Client Relationship Management 

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients and stakeholders.
  • Communicate project updates, milestones, and deliverables to clients regularly.
  • Attend client meetings, project reviews, and presentations.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships to ensure repeat business.
  • Technical Oversight
  • Lead and supervise SUE field crews in performing utility designating, locating, and data collection.
  • Review and approve utility mapping, data interpretation, and quality assurance processes.
  • Collaborate with engineers and surveyors to interpret utility data and integrate findings into design plans.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards such as ASCE 38-22 and local regulations.
  • Implement quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of utility data.
  • Review project deliverables for adherence to client specifications and industry standards.

Team Leadership and Development   

  • Actively contribute to recruitment efforts within the Practice Area and build a strong, capable team as needed.
  • Cultivate a collaborative and supportive work culture, offering guidance and mentorship to team members.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to ensure team members meet departmental goals and align with strategic objectives.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geomatics, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in utility engineering with at least 2 years in a project management role.
  • Proficient in utility mapping software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer).
  • Strong knowledge of utility locating technologies such as electromagnetic detection, GPR, and vacuum excavation.
  • Excellent client relationship skills, with a focus on communication and strong organizational abilities.

Preferred:

  • A Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) License is preferred.

Physical Requirements


In Office Work


The assignment may occasionally require repetitive physical tasks (such as operating a computer), standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time, extended time travelling in a vehicle, and carrying equipment and materials up to 25 pounds. 


Field Work


Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions to perform fieldwork, including exposure monitoring and site inspections. Physical stamina to perform manual tasks, including lifting, digging, and standing for extended periods. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly.
