The Associate Engineer - Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, and performance of database infrastructure in support of n-tier applications. This role focuses on building and maintaining database systems, managing database integrations, and supporting a fault-tolerant environment that meets Service Level Agreement (SLA) commitments. The position involves close collaboration with Senior Site Reliability Engineers, Cloud Service Engineers, and Clients to implement and maintain reliable database infrastructure solutions. This includes participating in environment standup activities, configuring database networking, and managing third-party integrations.
Internally, this role is titled Engineer (SRE), Associate.
Job Responsibilities/Duties:
- Assist in managing and grow in your role to take complete ownership client's data infrastructure that includes all database systems & storage, ETL, warehousing, blob storage etc. This could include any flavor of Microsoft SQL Server in a standalone/clustered, cloud/on-prem/hybrid/SaaS hosted environments.
- Routinely work with multiple stakeholders including RSI, client and cloud services.
- Assist in troubleshooting database issues, including isolating problem queries or capturing database traces.
- Assist in isolating database deployment related issues when escalated.
- Collaborate on the implementation of new database servers, storage solutions, software upgrades, and security patches.
- Assist in monitoring, debugging, and resolving production performance database issues, addressing infrastructure and network-related problems.
- Monitor, debug and communicate production performance database issues related to SQL code.
- Learn and adhere to database standards and best practices identified by the data leads.
- Identify and escalate potential database improvement areas (tables, indexes, etc.) to senior team members.
- Monitor and maintain operational database maintenance plans, with guidance as needed.
- Participate in on-call rotation and incident response for database-related issues.
- Perform database maintenance tasks such as backups, restores, and data imports/exports.
- Serve as a resource for SQL syntax and general RDBMS technical knowledge.
- Assist in managing and grow in your role to support and manage the core database infrastructure, ensuring high availability and data integrity.
- BS in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- 1-2 years’ experience in Database Administration in a Microsoft SQL Server
- 1-2 years’ relevant work experience in a software application production environment
- Ability to quickly grasp and understand both business and technical concepts, especially those involving data and reliability
- Knowledge of database monitoring and performance troubleshooting. Tools like MS SQL Profiler, Red-Gate Monitor, IDERA etc.
- Experience with database backups, restores, and data imports/exports
- Experience working in a Windows Server environment, providing system analysis and database support
- Familiarity with site reliability engineering practices, especially those related to database administration
- Familiarity with SQL scripting in support of product release cycles
- Good understanding of cloud environments, preferably Azure, with experience in database deployment on cloud infrastructure
- Self-motivated and thrives in a fast-paced environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
- Strong understanding of relational databases, with a preference for SQL Server
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
- Familiarity with TFS or Azure DevOps
- Experience with large-scale public sector IT projects, especially for Revenue or Finance agencies
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

RSI determines pay range based upon numerous compensation factors, including experience, skill set, and geographic location. A current and reasonable estimated range for this position is $65,000 - $75,500. However, it’s possible for an individual to be hired at a salary outside of this range.
