Description

The National WWII Museum is currently seeking a World War II Research Historian. The World War II Research Historian is responsible for teaching in the in the National World War II Museum’s higher education programs and spearheading the Veteran Research Services effort, serving as the primary researcher into relevant military records and related documents and helping to prepare historical monographs and reports. The Research Historian will develop and deliver online educational initiatives and courses; research and draft content for the Museum’s permanent and special exhibits and online content, and support the Museum’s public programs, symposia, and higher education workshops. The World War II Research Historian reports to the Executive Director, JCISWD, and the Institute’s Senior Historian. 

Requirements
  • Teach in the Museum’s Masters in WWII Studies and Continuing Education Programs in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU).
  • Conduct research and writing in response to member and patron requests within the Museum’s WWII Research Services program and in support of the mission of the POW/MIA Accounting Agency, with special emphasis on research into individual wartime service records and experiences.
  • Maintain liaison to the National Personnel Records Center (National Archives, NARA) in St. Louis, MO, cultivates deep understanding of NARA procedures; and serves as the Museum’s primary representative to all domestic and international repositories of military records pertaining to World War II. 
  • Conduct archival research and coordination both within the NWWIIM collection and outside locations to support the development and delivery of educational courses, higher education workshops, and public programs (ASU, Leadership initiatives, International Conference and public symposia, and others).
  • Conduct archival research, both within the NWWIIM collection and outside locations for exhibit needs, Institute publications, digital media projects, and education. This includes research related to oral histories, images, combat footage, and written accounts (diary, letters, or military reports) within the museum collection, national archives or other appropriate institution. 
  • Serve as part of the content team for development and update of exhibits and online content, conducting documentary, secondary, and archival research as required.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned by the Executive Director and the Senior Historian, JCISWD.

Qualifications

  • PhD in American or Military history, museum science, or related field.
  • Experience in historical research – preferably within a graduate program, museum, archive, or historical society environment (at least two years’ experience preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of World War II-era history.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills as well as strong organizational skills.
  • Additional Research Languages and a functional knowledge of presentation, spreadsheet, word processing applications and film/recording equipment are a plus.
  • Willingness to work overtime to support and execute special events or during heavy visitation periods.
