The National WWII Museum is currently seeking a Senior Historian. The Senior Historian plays a central role in advancing the mission of the Jenny Craig Institute and guiding and leading the Museum’s content on the American experience in World War II and why the war was fought, how it was won, and what it means today. The Senior Historian will engage fully in Museum and Institute activities and public programs, participate in the Museum's higher education programs and colloquia, perform research and writing functions for the Institute's Historical Research Services, take part in public programs and presentations, provide support to Educational Travel programs, and represent the Museum to the scholarly community at professional and academic conferences. The Senior Historian also will coach, mentor, and supervise the work of the Jenny Craig Institute’s historians in order to develop them professionally and achieve the greatest impact on the missions of the Museum and the Institute. The Senior Historian reports to the Executive Director of the Jenny Craig Institute.
- Develop and teach graduate-level courses as part of MA and continuing education programs for ASU. Plan for and manage Institute historians’ participation in ASU teaching and events.
- Contribute and peer-review written content to the Museum and the Institute's website and distribute writing tasks to Institute historians to manage the workload while giving them opportunities to expand their knowledge of WWII.
- Attend and take part in seminars, lectures, and public presentations. Supervise and mentor Institute historian support to these programs.
- Plan and develop content for Educational Travel programs. Participate in Educational Travel tours and events as a featured historian. Coach and mentor Institute historians providing support to Educational Travel programs.
- Participate in Institute Public Programming by interviewing guest speakers, taking part in panels and discussions, and giving talks on WWII leadership.
- Manage Institute historians’ contributions to the production and promotion of Museum content and projects.
- Assist the Institute's WWII Research Service team in the research and writing of monographs detailing individual WWII veterans' stories.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the Executive Director of the Institute for the Study of War and Democracy.
Qualifications
- PhD in American History, Military History, or related field.
- Established reputation in study of the American WWII experience, demonstrating specialized knowledge in military history and America’s role as a global power.
- Record of achievement and recognition in research and peer-reviewed publication, with evidence of commitment to public history and outreach to the media.
- Demonstrated skill in public speaking and background interacting with other scholars, media, and varied audiences in exploring historical material/themes for broad publics.
- Experience of at least a decade in a university, institute, historical society, museum, or related government institution, and as a published author on World War II topics.
- Evidence of creative approaches to the teaching of history.
- Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to perform in a collaborative work environment.
