SMG seeks a local Safety Coordinator – Power & Utilities in Indianapolis, Indiana/Surrounding Areas. This position will report directly to the Director of Safety Operations and will focus on promoting safety practices, conducting training, and establishing robust safety standards across multiple project sites within our operating footprint. 


 Overview of Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct quality safety observations, document findings, and focus on leading indicators.
  • Perform regular site visits to observe safety behaviors and work conditions, ensuring a safety-first approach across all electric construction project phases.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with relevant stakeholders.
  • Lead group training sessions on topics such as Minimum Approach Distances and Grounding.
  • Support the development of a long-term safety apprenticeship program in collaboration with the Department of Labor.
  • Conduct orientation training for new Associates at SMG’s Safety Yard on electrical utility practices.
  • Travel: 50% travel required within an eleven-state footprint (Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas).
Requirements
  • Five plus years of construction/power and utilities safety experience
  • Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel across 11 states to provide vacation and sick leave coverage.
  • Experience: Journeyman Lineman with five years of verifiable field experience.
  • OSHA 500 & 501
  • OSHA ET&D 10- and 30-hour construction preferred 
  • First-aid/CPR certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association

Skills:

  • Proficiency in public speaking to train groups of 25-30.
  • Ability to operate independently with minimal daily guidance.
  • Competency in effective email communication, document creation, and safety-related presentations.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new computer software and applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaborative team-player mindset.

Physical Demands of the job may include

  • Wearing personal protective gear correctly
