The Gilchrist Law Firm is currently seeking an Intellectual Property (IP) Policy Specialist / Patent Examiner to provide support for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in Alexandria, VA. This is an on-site position, offering an opportunity to contribute to the policy and examination efforts of a key federal agency in the field of intellectual property.
This role provides expert guidance on patent examining policies, rules, and procedures. The ideal candidate will have prior experience as a Patent Examiner and be able to offer clear, accurate advice on patent rules and complex IP issues. As an IP Policy Specialist, you will assist stakeholders with patent applications, filing, prosecution, and maintenance, respond to inquiries, clarify rule interpretations, and advise on form completion and petition matters. You may also assist with the electronic distribution of forms and resources when needed.
Responsibilities:
- Provide expert guidance on patent examining policies, rules, and regulations.
- Advise stakeholders on complex IP policy matters and help interpret patent rules and procedures.
- Answer inquiries about patent application processes, including filing, prosecution, and maintenance.
- Assist with completing forms, addressing rule interpretation questions, and answering maintenance fee inquiries.
- Provide clear instructions on where to access necessary forms, files, and additional resources relevant to patent applications.
- Offer support on the usage of the USPTO website and provide general information about patent rules and guidelines.
- Where applicable, electronically forward forms and relevant resources to stakeholders.
- Maintain accuracy and clarity in responses to ensure compliance with USPTO standards.
- Previous experience as a Patent Examiner with signature authority and a strong understanding of patent examining policies and procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of U.S. patent laws, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to interpret complex patent issues and offer clear, accurate guidance.
- Familiarity with USPTO resources, forms, and the patent application process.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in providing information and responding to inquiries.
- Security Clearance (preferred but not required).
- Experience with online patent application systems and e-filing processes.
- Experience in providing policy advice and guidance in a professional setting.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle complex questions related to patent policies.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a remote work environment.
- Ability to interact with various stakeholders including applicants, attorneys, and other USPTO personnel.
