Position Purpose

A Library Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations and services of a library. They assist librarians and library staff in various tasks to ensure the smooth functioning of the library and provide excellent service to patrons. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Customer Service: Provide friendly and helpful assistance to library patrons, including answering inquiries, providing information about library resources and services, and assisting with locating books, materials, or digital resources.
  2. Circulation Duties: Perform circulation tasks, such as checking books in and out, renewing materials, and issuing library cards. Maintain accurate records of borrowed and returned items using the library's automated system.
  3. Shelving and Organization: Organize and maintain the library's collections by shelving books, magazines, or other materials in their proper locations. Ensure shelves are neat, tidy, and in proper order according to the library's classification system.
  4. Collection Maintenance: Assist in the inventory, weeding, and deselection of outdated or damaged materials from the library's collections. Participate in the labeling, covering, or repair of books and other items as needed.
  5. Reference Assistance: Aid patrons in conducting basic research, locating reference materials, or using library computers and online resources. Provide guidance on the use of library databases, catalogs, and other digital tools.
  6. Interlibrary Loan Services: Facilitate interlibrary loan requests by assisting patrons in placing requests, tracking materials, and coordinating with other libraries for borrowing or lending items.
  7. Technology Support: Assist patrons with basic technology-related inquiries, such as computer use, printing, scanning, or using library equipment. Provide guidance on using library-specific software or digital resources.
  8. Program Support: Assist in organizing and facilitating library programs, such as storytimes, book clubs, workshops, or other community events. Help with setting up program spaces, preparing materials, and promoting events.
  9. Library Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of library spaces, including organizing reading areas, tidying study rooms, and ensuring a welcoming environment for patrons. Monitor and report any maintenance or repair needs to appropriate personnel.
  10. Cataloging and Processing: Assist with cataloging new materials, entering data into the library's cataloging system, and applying appropriate classification information. Process new acquisitions, including labeling, covering, and stamping items.
  11. Administrative Support: Provide administrative assistance to library staff, including photocopying, filing, data entry, or preparing reports. Assist with managing library holds, recalls, or overdue notices.
  12. Continuing Education: Stay updated on library trends, technologies, and new resources through professional development opportunities, training sessions, or workshops.
Requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Some positions may require post-secondary education or relevant library-related coursework.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact courteously and effectively with diverse patrons.
  • Familiarity with library systems, including circulation processes, cataloging, and library databases.
  • Knowledge of library classification systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress) and the ability to locate materials.
  • Proficiency in using computers, digital resources, and library-specific software.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining library collections and shelving materials accurately.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, to provide assistance and interact with patrons and colleagues.
