Science Museum Oklahoma (SMO) is one of 14 Oklahoma museums accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The Museum’s holdings focus on historical objects relating to transportation, space, military and more. Our goal is to be the best stewards of the Museum’s diverse collections. The registrar plays an integral role in the department’s record management and will oversee all records relating to the Museum’s collections, including loans, condition, location and insurance legality.
- Maintains and updates all records (paper and database) relating to the Museum’s collections, including loans, location, exhibition, publication and insurance values.
- Prepares paperwork, completes condition reports, provides shipping arrangements and security of objects for donations, transfers and incoming/outgoing loans; also oversees renewal paperwork for current loan agreements.
- Assists in managing the archives of the Museum’s institutional history, including past exhibits, photographs, and documents.
- Assists the Collections Manager with budget preparation and tracking.
- Assists the Collections Manager with regular monitoring of artifacts in storage and on exhibit, including pest management and security; conducts periodic inventories; maintains location and condition reports on the collection.
- Works with the Collections team to ensure all activities associated with the Museum’s collection is current with AAM Best Practices and follows established policies and procedures.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history or closely related field or equivalent experience.
- I have at least 1 year of professional experience working with archival and artifact collections in a museum environment.
- Knowledge of collections management standards.
- Excellent project management skills.

Working Conditions
This position works in an active and busy museum setting.
- Work involves frequent standing and walking for long periods of time.
- May require working on a computer for long periods of time, using a keyboard, viewing a digital screen.
- Work may include occasional pushing and/or pulling, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
This position may require the employee to drive for business purposes in either their own vehicle or a vehicle provided by the Museum. Employees that drive for business purposes must be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check and provide proof of insurance and a valid license to drive on an annual basis.

- This position has no direct or indirect supervisory responsibilities.
- This position must maintain positive working relationships with other departments within the museum and institutions with which the museum partners. Although this position does not directly interface with the public and the museum’s visitors daily, being ready and available to do so when needed is crucial.
