About the Organization: Heart Math Tutoring

We believe volunteer tutors can be a powerful resource for students if given tools and support, and we believe all children can understand math at high levels. We focus on students who may not have resources to access private tutoring and who qualify as “economically disadvantaged” in school records. To date, 98% of Heart students have met program growth goals, and over 90% of math teachers report that students show an increase in enthusiasm and/or confidence towards academics as a result of the program.


About the Role: Elementary Math Tutors

Tutors help elementary students build math skills and confidence through weekly one-on-one tutoring sessions by leveraging a guided, activity-based. Heart’s curriculum spans 12 fundamental math concepts, and each student’s starting point is determined by a pre-assessment prior to beginning the program. 

Job Responsibilities: Key responsibilities are listed below.

  • Tutor elementary students in mathematics using the Heart curriculum.
  • Serve as positive role models and provide encouragement to their students.
  • Maintain the highest level of moral, ethical, and professional conduct while at the school site and while representing Heart in the community.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early for tutoring sessions.
  • Keep clear notes in students’ progress folders.


Typical Work Week

  • An Elementary Math Tutor will typically work 6-9 hours a week, within a school day schedule, during scheduled tutoring hours. Driving between school sites may be required. 


Requirements

Desired Skills and Background

A person who is successful in the role of Elementary Math Tutor will likely have all or most of the skills/background below, which are listed in order of importance. 

  • Strong belief that all students can learn and have the potential to perform at or above grade level 
  • Desire to work with elementary-aged students 
  • Ability/willingness to quickly build expertise in teaching and learning
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills 
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience working with economically-disadvantaged populations

  

Elementary Math Tutor: Up to 9 hours per week, 5 months (December-April). $18 per hour. Ideal Start Date of December 2nd, 2024.
