Editorial Assistant, Food and Lifestyle
Description

Chronicle Books seeks an Editorial Assistant to support the Food and Lifestyle publishing group by providing administrative, editorial, and project management support primarily to the publishing director and executive editor. The Editorial Assistant will be responsible for managing assigned editorial acquisitions, successfully executing the original visions, and bringing projects to on-time publication. This entry level position is an excellent start for anyone interested in illustrated lifestyle and cookbook publishing. Primary areas of focus will be food and lifestyle books and formats.


The Editorial Assistant will log and evaluate submissions, deliveries and manuscripts. They will oversee corrections to manuscripts and galleys, they will maintain title schedules and title files, and they will assist Design, Production, and Sales and Marketing to shape and execute the vision of a title. Communicating with authors, artists, packagers, overseas publishers, and literary agents will also be key areas in this job.


The person in this role will also apply for CIP data and copyrights, assist with proposal research and consumer research, send out author and agent advance mailings, and order books and product samples for reference. Tracking payments, submitting expenses, maintaining general correspondence, creating and maintaining agendas, and scheduling travel arrangements will also be part of this position. 

  

Employees at Chronicle Books follow a flexible hybrid schedule of working a minimum of 3 days per week and up to 4 days per week in our San Francisco office, depending on project and business needs. Please note that this job description is not designed to cover all the activities required of the employee. 


Hiring Salary Range - $22.84/hr - $26.27/hr. This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the expected salary for this position and will be determined by factors including but not limited to: applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, and geographic location as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is also eligible for our profit share plan.

Requirements

  

Qualified applicants will need a passion for illustrated publishing, with strong interests in some of the following categories: cookbooks, personal growth, wellness, parenting, or pop culture. They should possess proven editorial experience (copyediting skills, proofreading skills, and attention to detail) along with demonstrated skills in copywriting and written communications. The Editorial Assistant will also need expert organizational, administrative, and time management skills and an ability to work well with a wide variety of people. They are strongly self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative group and they will have the ability to manage many details and tasks simultaneously. We want someone who will be an ambassador for Chronicle Books publishing, enhancing the company’s reputation among creators, retailers, librarians, the media, publishing peers, and end consumers.
