Position: Municipal Court Judge 

Department: Morgantown Municipal Court  

Schedule: Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings, and a twice-monthly evening court session.

Compensation: Hourly rate to be determined based on experience.


POSITION SUMMARY

Morgantown City Council is actively seeking qualified candidates for the position of Municipal Court Judge. This position serves a significant role in the community, handling criminal violations of city code and certain state offenses, with penalties limited to a maximum of 30 days imprisonment or a fine of up to $500.


The Municipal Court Judge will preside over cases in Morgantown’s municipal court, which has jurisdiction over traffic offenses, misdemeanors (including first offense DUI), and citations from building code and fire marshal officials. The court operates under Article 181 of Morgantown’s city code, with sessions held on Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings, and a twice-monthly evening court session intended for citation issued by officers working the evening or night shift. Each court session typically lasts between 1 to 2 hours.  


While a West Virginia-licensed attorney is preferred, the City Council welcomes application from individuals who can fulfill the position requirements outlines in the W. Vs. Code 8-10-2. This includes a commitment to participating in training provided by the West Virginia Municipal League.
