Description

HELIX Environmental Planning, Inc. (HELIX), a growing, employee-owned, California-based environmental consulting and planning firm, is seeking a motivated, experienced As-Needed Mid-Level Biologist for our Biological Resources Division for approximately one year of as-needed work in Madera County, with a high probability of time extension due to multiple Madera projects currently in construction. Lodging, mileage reimbursement, and meal per diem are included.


As-Needed Mid-Level Biologist responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conduct construction monitoring, ensure compliance measures of associated regulatory permits, complete daily monitoring logs, check exclusion zones, interface with construction crews, and potential relocation of California tiger salamanders. Candidates must be comfortable with hiking and standing for extended periods of time; be knowledgeable of the biological resources of the Central Valley, specifically vernal pool biology and California tiger salamander; be self-motivated and possess strong written and verbal communication skills; and work well under direction. Candidates must have reliable transportation to the work assignment location and have a valid California Driver’s License. Successful candidates will have a positive team-oriented attitude.

Hourly wages will be based on qualifications and/or experience. Expected starting pay range of $40 to $47 per hour.

Requirements

Biologist Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an environmental science, biology or related field (degree in biochemistry or microbiology not acceptable).
  • Three to five years of experience (outside of academic requirements) as a professional terrestrial biologist, including observation and handling experience focused on both adult and larvae California tiger salamanders.
  • Knowledge of Central Valley flora and fauna, with an emphasis on vernal pools and California tiger salamanders.
  • Experience with field data collection methods and equipment.
  • Experience conducting biological compliance monitoring for construction/restoration and utilities projects.
  • Must be able to hike long distances over varying terrain under varying weather conditions.
  • Valid CA driver’s license with a clean driving record over the last 3 years.

Qualifications considered a plus:

  • Permits from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife to survey for listed species found in Northern California, specifically possess a 10a(1)A California tiger salamander permit.
  • Designated Biologist status (agency approved) for construction projects.
  • Experience with conducting jurisdictional delineations and/or environmental compliance monitoring.
