The Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) team at BUILD uses data to measure the reach and impact of our services. The MEL team strives to better understand and report out who receives our services (demographics), what services our youth are receiving (outputs), and how these services improve our clients’ lives (outcomes).


The Data Coordinator will work collaboratively with others, both internally and externally, to oversee data system administration, monitor data completeness and quality, and provide data system training. Their chief aim is to help BUILD collect the data needed to tell compelling, evidence-based stories of the work BUILD is doing.


Responsibilities are but not limited to:


Coordinate and execute data system administration (approx. 35%) 

  • Create and manage data system user accounts, roles, and permissions
  • Serve as point-person for addressing user requests and troubleshooting issues
  • Facilitate requirements gathering for and documentation of data system changes
  • Assist with managing and modifying ETL (extract, transform, and load) pipelines that support internal reporting tools

Conduct data monitoring to ensure completeness and quality (approx. 35%)

  • Build and maintain monitoring reports, track issues, and communicate with staff to facilitate timely issue resolutions
  • Assist in the design and revision of user-friendly data dashboards to facilitate monitoring
  • Coordinate efforts to investigate and address common data issues discovered through monitoring
  • Ensure complete and timely data entry into external data systems
  • Assist program staff with data compilation and review for audits

Train staff how to access and use data systems (approx. 20%) 

  • Oversee training scheduling and logistics
  • Develop data system expertise to facilitate formal and informal trainings for groups and individuals
  • Supervise interns responsible for data entry tasks

Working collaboratively with other MEL staff to complete other duties as assigned (approx. 10%) 

Requirements

Education and work experience

  • Candidates with the skills needed for this role have most likely obtained a Bachelors degree in a field related to human services and/or data, and may often have a Masters degree as well. 
  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and/or reporting in a social services organization: minimum 1 year with bachelor’s degree, or minimum 4 years without bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with sensitive administrative data in a social services nonprofit setting preferred
  • Working familiarity with Power BI and/or Bonterra Case Management (formerly known as Apricot) preferred


Skills and abilities

  • Able to build highly collaborative, communicative, cross-functional working relationships
  • Able to independently prioritize work and monitor progress toward goals
  • Able to break down complex processes into digestible steps for documentation/training purposes, particularly for program staff with limited data proficiency
  • Able to learn new tools and processes quickly in an applied setting and adapt to evolving project needs
  • Understands fundamental concepts of database structures and models, data types, and data stewardship
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications, particularly Excel, SharePoint, and Power BI
  • Knowledge of SQL, Power Query M formula language, DAX, and/or R would be useful
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills
