SENIOR DESIGN ENGINEER

POSITION SUMMARY:


This role is responsible for leading the 3D CAD solid modeling work for concept development, NPD projects, and revisions to commercial products. It requires problem solving and developing creative, pragmatic solutions utilizing design thinking principles. In addition, this role will maintain drawings and specifications across PHOENIX product lines and assist with other product development duties such as prototyping with 3D prints and developing testing methodologies.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Contributes technical competence in respective tasks of new product development, re-engineering and quality compliance activities
  • Utilizes SolidWorks CAD Software for design of products
  • Applies appropriate design techniques for 3D solid modeling and prototyping
  • Provides direction in design analysis utilizing SolidWorks & mold flow simulations
  • Combines Design to Cost, Design for Manufacturability, and Design Thinking methods to support achievement of project objectives
  • Maintains product technical file library (both CAD data models, detailed drawing files) of product designs including file revisions, changes, and design modifications
  • Responsible for modeling and post-processing of 3D prints for customer projects and QA testing fixtures
  • Maintains SOPs, WINs, and forms related to position
  • Conceptualizes and designs new product CAD models supporting sales and customer requests
  • Keeps abreast of latest developments in injection molding process technology such as molding, automated assembly, packaging, novel materials, and processing
  • Monitor competitor products and technical competencies, performs competitor product analysis
  • Supports the ranking and evaluation of DFMEA reports, as necessary
  • Prepares and manages project timelines in project management system
  • Apply project management skills to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Host design review meetings
  • Collaborate with Tooling Engineers, Plant Engineers, Marketing, QA, Sales, customer contacts, and other stakeholders
  • Regularly review and report R&D design milestones, progress and direction of projects
  • Contribute to the establishment of R&D best practices to advance technical competency
  • Able to identify, break down and solve a variety of difficult technical problems
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Responsible to protect PCI intellectual property in design projects
  • Review patent searches and participate in due diligence of patent applications
  • Develop and implement customer relevant technical tests

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Travel 10%
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time
  • Responsible for following all Food Safety related policies and procedures

Requirements

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred

EXPERIENCE:

  • 7 to 10 years’ experience with 3D CAD software, 3+ years with SolidWorks preferred
  • Minimum 5 years on the job exposure to injection molding and/or mold making processes
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills – must be comfortable communicating with all levels of the organization (e.g. shop floor employees, technical professionals, managers, senior leaders) and with external business partners (e.g. customers, suppliers)
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings, lead cross-functional teams, apply sound judgment and problem-solving, and effectively manage competing priorities

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Pushing or Pulling (5-25 lbs. typically 40 – 70% of the day) – broom, scrap boxes/Gaylords; (25-60 lbs. typically 15-40% of the day)
  • Lifting or Carrying (5-25 lbs. typically 0-15% of the day) – scrap material (25-60 lbs. typically 15-40% of the day)
  • Simple grasping (15-70%)
  • Firm grasping (15-70%)
