Position Summary: Under limited supervision, performs a variety of paraprofessional civil engineering functions and may perform lead worker functions for the City of Canon City Public Works Department that include design support of various projects for the Public Works Department, preparation of maps, drawings, and project documents, construction surveying, operation of various software platforms, and performance of related work as required.

- Selects, reviews, develops, draws, edits, and/or modifies typical details, design standards, tabulations, bid items, reference notes, standard notations, specialized design details, subdivision maps, legal descriptions, plats, and other details to create plans in accordance with the project design concept.
- Checks calculations, detailed drawings, aerial photography, survey data, shop drawings, and finished plans or maps developed by co-workers, consultants, or contractors to ensure completeness, accuracy, and adherence to design concept, specifications, and contract provisions; identifies errors, problems, or non-standard situations and suggests alternate solutions.
- Develops, documents, tests, implements, and maintains computer applications and procedures to supplement drafting and design software.
- Drafts, maintains, and updates City maps, plats and plans utilizing computer aided drafting applications (CAD), indicating boundaries, streets, zoning, water distribution system components, and other infrastructure.
- Completes field surveys for boundary determination, site plans and profiles construction survey data collection, field verification of project designs, construction staking, and other related functions for various City projects utilizing an array of equipment and technology.
- Prepares CAD design files and drawing files for various projects. Ensures that design details are captured and expressed in a clear consistent manner. Prepares plan set drawings, project quantities, project documentation, and other technical drawings and reports as needed.
- Maintains “as built” drawings of records and database record file, subdivision maps, topographical maps, improvement plans, cemetery maps and associated database.
- Performs annual vehicle traffic counts, collects and analyzes data, and prepares relevant reports for utilization by Public Works and/or other outside agencies.
- Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.

Minimum Qualification(s):
Experience
- Three (3) years of experience in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), surveying, or a combination of the two.
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Licenses/Certifications
- Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one within sixty (60) days of hire, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Canon City.
- Ability and willingness to obtain AutoDesk Civil 3D For Infrastructure Design Professional Certification within six months of hire.
- Ability and willingness to obtain Certified Survey Technician (Level 1) within one year of hire.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.
Preferred Qualification(s):
Experience
- Previous experience as an Engineering Technician, with a municipal government.
- Previous experience utilizing modern survey equipment to capture field survey and complete construction staking.
Education
- Associates degree, or higher, in Civil Engineering, or related field
Licenses/ Certifications
- AutoDesk Civil 3D For Infrastructure Design Professional Certification
- Certified Survey Technician (Level 1) Certification

- This position works primarily in an office setting and occasionally works outdoors for field/inspection. This position requires normal physical exertion, the normal range of motion, dexterity and vision,
- Physical demands of job require some lifting; pulling; carrying and pushing of objects –approximately 15-50 pounds.
- Frequent bending, simple grasping, finger/manual dexterity, standing, walking, twisting upper body, stooping, and hearing, the ability to occasionally walk on uneven surfaces, work in varying weather conditions, and a variety of outdoor work environments (parks, roads, construction sites, plants with equipment, noise, etc.).
- Occasional climbing on stairs.
- Communicates verbally with City staff, outside agencies and the public in one-on-one settings, group settings and over the telephone.
Additional Information
- This position will typically work Monday – Friday but will flex to working weekends and evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.
- This position will be required to attend occasional City Council meetings and/or other meetings and events after normal work hours.
- Travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County will be required.
- Frequent extension of work-day to meet deadlines.
