Summary:

Under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Medical Director is responsible for the administration, management, and oversight of medical care throughout the Crisis Services program. The Medical Director works to strengthen SFRC's integrity by ensuring that Crisis Services’ medical policies, procedures, protocols, and systems are in place and in compliance with applicable state & federal regulatory requirements and CARF standards. The Medical Director represents the agency in a positive manner in all community collaborations and meetings as assigned by the CMO. 


Duties and Responsibilities of the Crisis Services Medical Director (PRN): (Included but not limited to) 

You'll report to the Crisis Services Director and: 

  • Plan, organize, and perform assignments pertaining to program development, implementation, revision, and oversight; develops or revises program policies and procedures relevant to crisis client treatment services, including but not limited to admission and discharge procedures, standing orders, medication administration, transfers to higher level of care, and basic medical care as it relates to crisis services.   
  • In tandem with the Crisis Services Director, responsible for oversight of medical staff compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines governing medical service delivery, confidentiality, and ethics within the Crisis Services program. 
  • Oversee medical and psychiatric operations in the Crisis Services program and ensure high quality of client care; includes supervision of Crisis EMTs, RNs, and Psychiatric Providers.   
  • Provide consultation with the consulting Pharmacist to ensure adherence to regulation standards. 
  • Maintain current working knowledge of behavioral health-related state and federal regulations to include licensing certification standards put forth by the Department of Health (DOH), Behavioral Health Services Division (BHSD), Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) standards, and CARF, as well as other governing/accreditation bodies and as mandated by the CEO and CMO. 
  • Keeps abreast of current information on co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder treatment approaches. 
  • Review all client files and programmatic systems on a quarterly basis for Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement within a designated timeframe as defined by licensing CARF certification, New Mexico Administrative Code (NMAC) for Crisis Triage Centers (CTCs) and Mobile Crisis Teams (MCTs), and best-practice standards.   
  • Attends mandatory meetings and trainings as assigned. 
  • Provides coordination, availability, and full participation in all aspects of any programmatic review, survey, site visits, and/or evaluations. 
  • Understand and maintain HIPAA and 42CFR Part 2 confidentiality standards relative to the SFRC. 
  • Performs and/or coordinates other special assignments and tasks, as required, by the CMO or Crisis Services Director. \

Supervision and Oversight Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Crisis Services medical staff to develop individual training plans, skill-based competency assessments, and supervision plans.  
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations and skill-based competency evaluations of all supervisees. 
  • Provide ongoing, documented medical direction to the Crisis Services medical staff through coaching, mentoring, and strengths-based supervision. 
  • Ensure that electronic medical records, including individual medical information and required billing documentation, are recorded and conducted in compliance with all ethical and legal standards. 
  • Work with CMO and Crisis Services Director to address performance concerns of Crisis Services medical staff.  
Requirements

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:: 

  1. Effective oral and written communication skills with internal and external clients. 
  2. Computer experience, knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to use an EHR and/or EMAR system. 
  3. Ability to solve unexpected problems as they arise while considering liability, precedence, programmatic implications, and other possible future impacts on the program, services, or organization. 
  4. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and direct the work within the agency. 
  5. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders. 

Education and Experience: 

  1. Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy (MD or DO) by an accredited college or university in Family Medicine, Primary Care, or related medical field.  
  2. Three (3) years’ or more experience in Addictions Treatment, and two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred. 
  3. Valid New Mexico medical license and DEA registration, with eligibility for prescribing controlled substances. 
  4. Must be computer literate in order to effectively maintain compliance with licensing and certification standards and requirements for use of computerized client assessments, data systems, etc. 
  5. Must have and maintain a current, valid NM Driver’s License. Must also have and maintain a clean driving record, as well as auto insurance. 
  6. Bi-lingual/Bi-cultural preferred (English/Spanish/Diné).
