JOB TITLE: Summer Camp Waterfront Lifeguard
REPORTS TO: Program Director and/or Site Coordinator
FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt, Hourly
JOB PURPOSE:
Under the direct supervision of the Camp Director, or as assigned, the Summer Camp Waterfront Lifeguard is responsible for working directly with children, members & other adults/youth. They will administer all functions related to guarding the waterfront, running programming at the waterfront, and controlling all activity near the waterfront. This position plays an integral role in the development of building strong character values in others and will focus on the safety of program participants. All staff must strive to work cooperatively with fellow employees to achieve the goals and objectives of the YMCA.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):
- Performs all lifeguard duties, including ability to lift people out of waterfront area, perform CPR, scan waterfront areas to ensure safety of participants.
- Responds to all emergency and non-emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and proper trained skills; completes related reports as required.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the waterfront areas.
- Take a leadership role in any emergency that takes place in and around the waterfront areas.
- Enforce waterfront rules & policies to ensure the safety of all participants and swimmers.
- Nurtures children through purposeful programming.
- Creates a positive rapport and shared interest with all youth; models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Attends and participates in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
- Understands and implements daily diversity and inclusion practices, ensuring all students and adults feel safe and welcome. Regardless of gender identifiers, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, faith, and background.
- Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse.
- Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff.
- Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements.
- Follows all policies, procedures, and standards as established by the law or the Y (e.g. safety or emergency procedures, behavior guidance strategies, child abuse prevention policies); makes ADA accommodations where appropriate; maintains the program site, equipment, and required program records.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA or ARC standards
- Current YMCA or ARC lifeguard Certification (will provide upon employment)
- Current CPR/First Aid/O2 certification (will provide upon employment)
- Must be an example of good moral behavior
- At least 3 months working and/or volunteering with children ages 5-17.
- Desire to work with children daily.
Preferred:
- One or more years of college in a related field (i.e. recreation, child development, psychology, etc.)
- Bilingual - English/Spanish
- CPO Certified
- 6 months of experience in an aquatic setting
