Advanced Practice Provider (NICU)
Description

Fairfax Neonatal Associates, LLC is seeking experienced and highly motivated, full-time Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to join our private practice serving award-winning community hospitals in Northern Virginia. Our dedicated APPs work alongside Neonatologist in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) at Inova Fairfax, Inova Fair Oaks, Inova Alexandria and Inova Loudoun Hospitals. 


As an APP with FNA, you’ll provide high-quality, ethical, and timely neonatal care to premature and critically ill infants under the supervision of a Neonatologist and within the scope of collaborative agreements.

Duties/Responsibilities


  • Provide oversight of the care team to manage direct patient care for a specified patient population; seek and assimilate input from the team and parents; provide support and leadership in a shared decision-making process to develop the plan of care.
  • Actively participate in family centered care and communicate in a professional and compassionate manner; refer patients to specialists and to relevant ancillary services as appropriate
  • Communicate with families about treatment, prevention, and anticipatory guidance post discharge.
  • Communicate clearly to residents, fellows, new providers and nurses’ expectations regarding patient updates, notification of significant clinical changes and effective documentation. Encourage questions from participants on the care team.
  • Respond to FNA colleagues and Inova/community medical providers in a timely and respectful manner, adhere to work schedule, aid colleagues with high acuity patients, and anticipate patient and colleague needs when on call.
  • ·Using the FNA template in EPIC, document patient progress thoroughly, accurately, and concisely. Maintain an accurate and up to date problem list and plans for the management for each individual problem. Daily progress notes should convey to a consultant, staff, and parents the major issues, differential diagnoses, and management plans.
  • Adequately and promptly complete all clinical documentation as required by JCAHO, other regulatory bodies and/or the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and FNA guidelines concerning clinical charge documentation.
  • Ability to represent Fairfax Neonatal Associates and Inova while on transport to outlying hospitals, attend the needs of newborns requiring all levels of care and serve as the leader of the transport team. Use critical thinking to provide individualized care, performs necessary procedures, and communicates and collaborates with attending Neonatologist at Inova Children's Hospital as well as the provider at outlying hospitals. Leads debriefs at the conclusion of each transport. 
  • Provide sign out to colleagues, according to the FNA template, that prepares the covering physicians and APPs to prioritize patients, follow through on actions needed and be prepared for contingencies and anticipate potential complications. 
  • Expands clinical and professional knowledge base. Recognizes the importance of participation in professional organizations. Accepts personal responsibility for professional development and the maintenance of professional competence and credentials. Continuously participates in self-evaluations of advanced nursing practice skills to ensure competent clinical care and continued self-development. Must also actively participate in weekly organization meetings, policy changes and Continuing Education Credits (CEUs). 
  • Identify problems related to patient services and make recommendations for improvement. Cooperate and participate in the development, implementation and revision of policies affecting medical practice, judgment, and quality of care. Participate as a member of special care teams, NICU clinical teams, Medical Staff and hospital committees as requested by FNA. APP will participate and support corporate objectives.
  • Follow established bylaws, policies and procedures, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.


 
 





Requirements


  Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Competence in the clinical skills needed in neonatal-perinatal medicine such as the ability to perform umbilical lines, PICC line insertions, needle thoracentesis, administer moderate sedation and other abilities relevant to the position.
  • Competently use and initially interpret laboratory tests, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the indications, risks, and limitations of said procedures.
  • Understanding of the emotional impact on the family of having a child born prematurely or born with a life-threatening and/or chronic condition and must demonstrate the communication skills necessary for encouraging dialogue.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills to enhance team function, the learning environment, and/or the health care delivery system/environment to improve patient care.
  • Ability to practice independently at the level 3 hospitals and responsible for collaborating with on-call      physicians and identifying situations that require escalation to the Neonatologist. 
  • Sufficient typing skills, capable of utilizing basic word processing and spreadsheets.

Education & Experience

  • Board Certification in Nursing and Board Certified as a Neonatal-Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with NICU experience.
  • VA Nursing license, VA APP license, DEA Certificate, NRP Certification
