JOB TITLE: Group Fitness Instructor - Fit Kids

REPORTS TO: Program Director /or as assigned

FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt


JOB PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Group Fitness Coordinator, the Group Fitness Instructor for Fit Kids plans, prepares, and instructs classes for children ages 4 years - 17 years in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance to YMCA policies and procedures. All staff must strive to work cooperatively with fellow employees to achieve the goals and objectives of the YMCA.


PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):

  1. Ensure a clean, safe, comfortable, and enjoyable environment for members and guests while they are participating in the Fit Kids group fitness class on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30 am - 10:30 am each week.
  2. Demonstrate leadership capabilities and adaptability at the front of the class, making each session fun and enjoyable while motivating participants.
  3. Capable of engaging children in age-appropriate physical activities, effectively using games, music, cueing, tempo, and safe transitions to guide participants through fun and dynamic exercises promoting physical fitness, coordination, and teamwork. 
  4. Responsible for service to members and participants by learning and using participant's names and being available before and after class for questions from participants; building effective relationships.
  5. Responsible for attending all scheduled classes; when absent or unavailable, communicates with direct supervisor and secures a substitute and provides guidance for that substitute.
  6. Constructively corrects members & class participants when incorrect or dangerous technique is observed.
  7. Demonstrates the highest level of safety in all activities.
  8. Represents the YMCA in a positive, professional manner always through adherence to the dress code and courtesy towards all members, guests, and staff.
  9. Responds to emergencies and reports all incidents, as required.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Required:

  • Must be 18 years old
  • Must be available weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30 am - 10:30 am.
  • Each candidate will have a formal interview, which may include a written and practical assessment, to demonstrate knowledge and competency as an Instructor.
  • All on-boarding safety training
  • Ability to relate and communicate well with individuals of all ages, races, religions, and communities

Preferred:

  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid/O2 Certification
  • At least six months of experience as a participant or teaching group fitness classes.
  • Education in nutrition, physical education, public health, etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Group Exercise Instructor certification or specific program certification (i.e. Les Mills Born to Move)
