Description
The Railroad Plate Truck Operator is responsible for operating specialized vehicles, known as plate trucks, to transport and position steel plates, track panels, and other materials used in railroad construction, maintenance, and repair. This role ensures that materials are safely moved and placed at various railroad locations to facilitate operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate railroad plate trucks to transport steel plates, track panels, and other related materials to and from work sites.
- Safely load, unload, and position materials on the truck using appropriate equipment.
- Follow established safety procedures and guidelines while operating equipment and handling materials.
- Ensure that all materials are securely loaded and unloaded, minimizing the risk of accidents or damage.
- Perform pre-trip inspections of the truck and related equipment to ensure proper working conditions.
- Monitor weather and track conditions to adjust operations as necessary.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and other personnel to coordinate tasks and ensure efficient material delivery.
- Maintain detailed logs and reports of material deliveries, truck maintenance, and other relevant activities.
- Operate other equipment, such as cranes, forklifts, or other machinery, as needed for loading and unloading tasks.
- Assist with minor maintenance and troubleshooting of the truck and equipment, reporting any mechanical issues to maintenance personnel.
- Follow all company policies, safety regulations, and local/national transportation laws.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a clean driving record.
- Previous experience operating heavy machinery, trucks, or similar equipment preferred.
- Knowledge of railroad operations and terminology is a plus.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and handle heavy materials.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment.
Working Conditions:
- Work will be performed primarily outdoors, often in varying weather conditions.
- The position may involve working during evenings, weekends, or on holidays based on operational needs.
- Potential for exposure to loud noises, dust, and other environmental factors common in railroad work zones.
Requirements
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) and work in a physically demanding environment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and crouch for extended periods.
- Ability to operate equipment for long durations in various weather conditions.
- Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination to safely operate machinery.
