Summer Hockey Camp Counselor
Description

Under direct supervision of the Hockey Director, plan, organize and implement day camp programs, the Hockey Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising children and providing a safe and enjoyable camp experiences for the participants.  This is a seasonal/part-time position, no benefits.


  • Assist the Hockey Director with daily program leadership, including planning and implementing on-ice and off-ice recreational activities.
  • Be prepared to initiate and lead daily activities with enthusiasm, sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect.
  • Supervise campers at all times, ensuring their safety and well-being during all activities, on and off the ice.
  • Show compassion, patience, and respect when interacting with children; provide clear instructions and positive reinforcement.
  • Ensure a clean and orderly environment by organizing and maintaining equipment, supplies, and activity areas, including lunch and locker rooms.
  • Take attendance daily, address any attendance issues, and notify the Hockey Director of concerns or supply shortages.
  • Prepare lesson plans and create a variety of weekly indoor and outdoor activities, including rainy-day options.
  • Monitor camper behavior, redirect issues before they escalate, and maintain discipline in a positive manner.
  • Oversee transitions, including directing campers to buses, locker rooms, or aftercare, ensuring authorized pick-up and sign-out procedures are followed.
  • Participate in all camp activities and events, including field trips, ensuring accurate camper headcounts during transportation and at destinations.
  • Ensure campers complete swim tests and assign appropriate swimming areas for safety.
  • Administer first aid when necessary and always carry a first-aid kit.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled meetings, events, and training, including obtaining CPR and first-aid certification.
  • Enforce camp policies such as no camper cell phone usage and maintain focus on campers (no personal phone use during camp).
  • Assist with before and after care supervision when required.
  • Support the July 4th special event and other scheduled events as needed.
  • Be alert to the physical and emotional state of campers, boosting their self-esteem and encouraging interaction.
  • Act as a positive role model, following all camp rules and setting a good example through ideal behavior.
  • Prioritize the safety and needs of campers during all activities, including facility and equipment use.


 


Requirements
  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Must be able to demonstrate good hockey skills and understanding of the game
  • Must be able to work Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM during the summer.
  • Must demonstrate good judgement when dealing with the public in keeping with the mission statement of the park district.
  • Must be able to follow policies and procedures.
  • Must use good safety awareness and judgement.
  • Must be able to respond effectively and quickly when problems and/or emergencies arise.


Salary Description
$15-20/hour depending on qualifications
