Reporting Relationship: Reports to EVS Supervisor

Primary Accountability:

The EVS Technician is responsible for providing a safe care environment for patients and staff (visitors as appropriate to setting) within the facility achieved by demonstrating the principles of cleaning, laundering, disinfection and quality assurance toward the reduction of harmful pathogens for the benefit of the patients, visitors and staff.  


Major Duties:

  • Responsible for cleaning and disinfection of the hospital facility. 
  • Performs duties while demonstrating working knowledge of the health care cleaning and disinfecting principles and requirements, proper and safe chemical use, equipment handling, and labor-saving products for all items within the facility. 
  • Adheres to all organizational safety, risk management and infection control standards and promotes a culture of safety.  
  • Accountable for maintaining all appropriate logs and check lists/sheets as accurate and current.  
  • Responsible for cleaning and disinfection of equipment and areas of assignment according to procedures, policies and manufacturer recommendations.  
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the cleaning and disinfecting requirements specific to highly sensitive environments.  
  • Actively participates in departmental performance improvement initiatives, including but not limited to initiatives to improve patient experience and cleanliness metrics.   
  • Maintains supplies and equipment by properly stocking and restocking environmental services cart in a neat and orderly fashion.  
  • Removes waste and transport to appropriate disposal area while identifying proper waste streams (i.e. regulated medical, solid or hazardous).  
  • Follows all environmental and infection prevention practices (i.e. proper cleaning and disinfection protocols and process, hand hygiene, stand & isolation precautions, as well as proper donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  
  • Recognizes and adheres to patient privacy requirements (HIPAA).  
  • Practices critical thinking skill to include prioritization of duties and immediate needs/requests (Stat cleans).
  • Demonstrates personal accountability. 
  • Identify and utilize appropriate resources to ensure identified problems or concerns are followed through and resolved.  
  • Demonstrate knowledge of facility safety requirements.  
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate and properly maintain all EVS tools and equipment needed to clean and disinfect the environment. 
  • Collects soiled linens from all applicable departments. 
  • Transports and stores designated linen carts per infection control guidelines. 
  • Washes and dries clothes and linens. 
  • Understand functions of various soaps and bleaches.
  • Follows precautions as state on MSDS for all chemicals used.  
  • Cleans and disinfects linen carts as required per policy and procedure. 
  • Transport clean linens and restock departments as necessary.  
  • Remove damaged stock and place on shelf to be replaced by supervisor.  
  • Assists in the training of new EVS Technicians as requested.  

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous housekeeping/laundry experience preferred, but not required.

Physical Demands:

  • Eye/Hand, Eye/Foot and Hand/Foot Coordination.
  • Normal eyesight, with or without corrective lenses.
  • Normal hearing, with or without hearing aids.
  • Motor coordination and manual dexterity. 
  • The ability to bend, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
  • The ability to push and pull equipment.
  • Prolonged amount of sitting, standing and walking throughout the day. 
  • The ability to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly. 

Work Environment:

  • Well-lit work area.
  • Hot with high humidity work area. 
  • Exposed to hazards of steam and heat
  • May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. 
  • Meet and talk with a wide variety of employees, visitors and patients. 
  • Exposed to wide variety of chemicals. 
  • Exposed to offensive odors. 
  • Exposure to unpleasant elements such as accidents, illnesses and injuries. 
  • Able to work under emergency situations.
