Horticulturalist
Description

The Niles Park District is seeking a passionate and skilled Horticulturist to join our team full-time. Under the guidance of the Superintendent of Grounds, the Horticulturist will play a key role in enhancing the beauty and health of the District's parks and facilities by overseeing the design, planting, and maintenance of landscaped areas.


Key Responsibilities

  • Landscape Management: Plan, coordinate, and execute the planting, care, and maintenance of flower beds, shrubs, and planters across District parks and facilities.
  • Creative Design: Develop innovative and visually appealing layouts for flower beds and other landscaped areas.
  • Plant Care: Monitor and manage the health of plants, addressing issues such as weed control, diseases, fungi, and pests.
  • Team Leadership: Assist the Superintendent in, training, and supervising part-time staff to ensure high-quality work and a positive team environment.
  • Budget Collaboration: Provide input during the budgeting process and make recommendations for future projects, equipment needs, and schedules.
  • General Maintenance: Participate in general park upkeep, support special events, and contribute to snow removal efforts during the winter season.


Requirements

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Perform repetitive tasks such as digging, planting, weeding, and pruning.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Stand, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
  • Operate and maneuver tools, equipment, and machinery necessary for horticultural and maintenance tasks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience designing and installing plant beds.
  • Strong knowledge of plant identification, maintenance practices, and landscape design.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license required.
  • A team-oriented mindset with excellent organizational and communication skills.

Salary range: $54,000-$60,000/year
