JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under direction, performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of gasoline and diesel-powered fleet vehicles including Emergency vehicles and equipment.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:
- Performs work in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Uses an electronic engine analyzer and related diagnostic equipment to identify problems.
- Repair, adjust, or replace any major and minor vehicle or equipment components including air conditioning systems, electrical systems, cooling systems, electronic systems, fuel systems, drive trains, hydraulic systems, air brake systems, diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, fuel pumps, starter motors, alternators, switches, and batteries.
- Repair, rotate, mount, and balance tires.
- Respond to requests for emergency road service; make emergency repairs in the field; test drive vehicles; clean work areas and related shop facilities.
- May perform gas and electric welding, and metal fabrication.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
OVERVIEW OF POSITION:
This position mainly involves automotive repair and maintenance. The typical schedule is Monday – Friday from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM. There are scheduled breaks during the workday along with a scheduled lunch break. There are times when mandatory overtime is required. Onsite training is provided.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent and (1) one-year experience as an automotive or heavy truck technician; or equivalent combination of training and experience that evidences knowledge of maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles and equipment. Possession of a valid State of Kentucky Class-B CDL vehicle operator’s license is preferred. Completion of secondary education or trade school is preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to tolerate various indoor and outdoor temperatures and climates. Perform moderate to heavy repetitive physical labor for an extended period of time. Ability to lift, carry, and/or pull 50-75 pounds. Ability to operate internal radio system. Must maintain the physical requirements to successfully pass the Essential Job Function test as required for this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of standard practices, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of fleet maintenance equipment; safety practices and procedures; welding techniques and procedures. Ability to utilize or operate standard mechanic tools and equipment; and diagnose equipment malfunctions. Skill in the operation of welding equipment and operation of cutting torches.
