Description
Purpose: An ESD Middle School Instructor helps students develop historical thinking skills and uses technology to engage, enhance, and extend learning both in and out of the classroom. They create a classroom with opportunities to hone skills in critical thinking, writing, and communication. As an effective member of the Religious and Historical Studies Department, the History Instructor is flexible and able to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues. Essential Functions:
- Teach 4 sections of Middle School History (Grades 5 - 6), delivering instruction aligned with ESD’s Statement of Educational Philosophy and Mission.
- Provide integral and varied support, planning, oversight, and communication as an academic advisor.
- Offer significant involvement and/or leadership in an extracurricular capacity as a club advisor or athletic coach.
- Participate and engage in professional activities and gatherings at team, departmental, divisional, and school-wide levels.
- Use appropriate technology in support of the curriculum of the twenty-first-century global classroom.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Work closely with colleagues on the school’s curricular initiatives.
Abuse Risk Management Standards:
- Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students.
- Attends required abuse risk management training.
- Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
- Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Working Environment:
- Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
- Generally, 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing.
- Minimal temperature variations
- Off-site travel to include rustic environments and occasional overnight trips.
- Generally, a hazard-free environment.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in social studies education, history, or related field —Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum three years of experience as an Upper Elementary or Middle School teacher preferred.
- Proficiency in educational technology and twenty-first-century pedagogy; familiarity with G Suite.
- Commitment to participate broadly and cheerfully in the life of the school.
- Experience designing and implementing a 21st Century history curriculum.
- A growth mindset.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in various disciplines and at various levels.
