We have an exciting opportunity for an /senior role as Sr. Systems Engineer 3 to join our Kontron Family! Kontron is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Systems Engineer/Architect to join our team and contribute to the development of cutting-edge, ruggedized systems for the aerospace and defense industries. This role requires a deep understanding of system engineering principles, hardware and software integration, and the unique challenges of designing systems for harsh environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and development activities for innovative system solutions for a wide range of rugged embedded computing requirements within our target markets, leveraging Kontron’s various building blocks.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define comprehensive system requirements and specifications, ensure system deliverables meet or exceed customer expectations and industry standards.
- Collaborate on developing comprehensive system reliability, qualification and verification plans to ensure all components meet rigorous performance, reliability, and safety standards required
- Leverage strong analytical skills to address development issues promptly and effectively.
- Work with industry standards groups in participating and leading initiatives in these meetings and present technical topics.
- Kontron’s rugged systems platforms include various form factors such as rackmount, ATR, MCU and flange mounted embedded systems with a wide range of I/O interconnections from MIL-Circular to ARINC 600 connectors based on the target market and environmental conditions. These systems typically comprise of integrating x86 or ARM processors, GPU/Accelerator devices, network switch, memory, storage, peripheral interfaces, wireless devices, integrated power, other application specific interfaces, and software. As a member of the project team that includes Electrical Engineering (Hardware), Mechanical, Thermal, Software and DQA (Design Quality Assurance), you will:
- Lead the creation of these high-performance, compact, and rugged embedded computing systems through design, integration, prototype, and test.
- Collaborate with global cross-functional teams to define system requirements, ensuring seamless integration of hardware, software, and mechanical components.
- Apply your expertise to a wide range of applications in demanding environments, including defense, avionics, and work with the customer to align their requirements to our platforms and identify required modifications and development criteria for their specific project.
- Develop and/or assist in supporting documentation as required for the project such as requirements definition, system diagrams, ICDs, FMEA, application notes, user guides, system level test plans.
- Devise approaches to resolve unusual or complex system engineering problems.
Other Responsibilities:
- Conduct feasibility studies and system-level analysis to assess performance, reliability, and efficiency of embedded systems in harsh environments.
- Provide adaptable support to the systems engineering organization. Responsibilities may include direct program systems engineering support, proposal development, or support to internal development tasks.
- Develop and maintain system engineering plans, documentation, functional diagrams, and compliance matrices, design verification plans.
- Ensure designs meet required industry standards such as MIL-STD-810/461 and DO-254 /DO-178C, DO-160G, etc
- Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in rugged defense and avionics systems.
- Define, develop and analyze the requirements and specifications of the systems and platforms to be developed, considering the integrated hardware / software applications required by the market and customer use cases.
- Act as internal technical representative of clients and ensure that design requirements are properly understood and implemented. Verify the conformity of the system and its components and ensure that they meet the requirements.

- Strong understanding of system engineering principles, including requirements analysis, design, integration, reliability, verification, and validation.

- Experience with different operating systems (e.g Windows, Linux, RTOS)
- Understanding of various programming languages (e.g., C++, Python, Java)
- Knowledge of cybersecurity and information assurance principles
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or equivalent in engineering or a related technical discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, with a focus on hardware/software integration in embedded ruggedized systems. Experience with open platforms and industry standards such as VITA, VPX, SOSA, ARINC a plus.

- Experience working with JIRA, Confluence, Teams or similar collaborative tools
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required enabling an effective interface with other departments and/or professionals, and capable of representing the organization as the main technical contact, as well as providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
