Job Summary:
The Assistant Music Director (Contemporary Choir) is a part-time contractor position. This position is responsible for recruiting, training, and directing the music group for the Contemporary Choir Mass (Sunday 5pm). The ideal candidate produces music that is beautiful, uplifting, and promotes full, active and conscious participation in the Liturgy. This position reports directly to the Director of Music. In addition to these core responsibilities, there is additional opportunity to support praise and worship activities at the parish. Compensation is commensurate with experience and scope of work.
Ministerial Character:
The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the Parish of St. John Neumann, which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.
Positions employed at St. John Neumann help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the contractor in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

The Role You Play
- Produce high quality music for St. John Neumann Contemporary Choir Mass
- Develop balanced repertoire appropriate for the rites, liturgical year, and theology
- Produce weekly worship aids for the Sunday 5pm Contemporary Choir Mass
- Provide guidance and leadership to vocalist and instrumental musicians
- Recruit, lead and disciple talented adult and youth musicians (vocalist and instrumentalist) to play for mass.
- Additional compensation may be earned as you support youth and parish praise and worship activities, including Life Teen Nights (High School Ministry), EDGE mornings (Middle School Ministry), Alpha, retreats, concerts and other parish events.
- Ensure that all parish and diocesan guidelines within the Virtus Safe Environment program are followed and promoted.
- This is a part time contractor position, with a minimum expectation of 5 hours per week.
- The role supports the Contemporary Choir Mass at 5pm on Sunday evenings with music selection, worship aid preparation, rehearsal, and music ministry during mass.
- Total competitive compensation will be commensurate with both your proven experience and the scope of work, which will be negotiated in the final contract. ($750-$1,500 per month)
- A pianist with at least 2-3 years of liturgical experience in the Catholic Church, leading contemporary choirs and/or Praise and Worship Groups is strongly preferred.
- Degree in Music, Sacred Music, and/or Liturgy is preferred.
- The candidate must be highly organized, with excellent technical music skills and able to create a positive and inspiring atmosphere.
- Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.
