What you'll be doing
You’re joining a summer camp team where roles and tasks are collaborative and shared. As a Head Counselor you’ll be responsible for organizing and leading a group of 12-15 diverse campers ensuring safety, providing guidance, community building and most importantly, fun.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
The duties for this role include, but are not limited to:
- Lead a dedicated group of children for a five-week program serving elementary children in rising grades 1 to 5
- Follow weekly group schedule, ensuring on time arrival to all activities and programming
- Mentor and collaborate with the group Assistant Counselor giving direct guidance and instructions for maximum group effectiveness and presenting a unified message to campers
- Assist campers while participating in STEM learning blocks led by Educators and recreation activities led by Coaches such as sports and swimming
- Lead activities and assist specialists during program blocks in a variety of areas such as crafts, nature, science, sports and recreation
- Lead group day to day operations such as coordinating bathroom breaks, guiding behavior in the lunchroom including eating with your group, and preparing your group for dismissal
- Be the “first line of defense” for camper behavioral issues and conflicts helping to diffuse the situation and avoid possible escalations in the future
- Serve as a role model for campers and other staff by:
? Arriving on time, fully ready to participate
- Attend all orientation week training sessions
- Enforce the highest level of safety at all times, adhering to camp policies and procedures
- Maintain accurate group attendance records on a daily basis
- Coordinate dismissal for your group, meeting family members, maintaining accurate dismissal information such as recording parent pickups and ensuring family members are on the authorized pickup list
- Maintain confidentiality of camper emergency data for your group
What you bring

- Head Counselors must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program, high preference given to those at least 18 years and/or entering their Freshman year of college
- Previous employment experience
- Previous experience working with youth such as babysitting or coaching; high preference given to those with experience working with youth in a group recreational setting such as camp, youth group or after school programs
- High swimming competency
- Availability to work the entire camp season and attend all required orientations and trainings
- Have a desire to make a difference in the lives of kids
- Are Bilingual (Spanish/English)
- Want to know what Color Wars is and are already strategizing to win the annual trophy
- Posses a valid social security card and NYS state identification
- Pass a background check with fingerprint approval if you are not a Mamaroneck School District employee (we will provide instructions as part of the onboarding process)
- Provide two references only one can be a personal (non-family) reference
- June 30, 2025 to August 8, 2025 (No camp July 4th)
- 8:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Regular camp days
- 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Regular camp days with weekly staff meeting
