Job Summary:
The Technical Field Specialist will play a key role in providing on-site technical support, conducting line audits, and troubleshooting application issues for customers in the paint and coatings industry. This field-based role requires extensive experience in paint application, product chemistry, and problem-solving. Strong communication skills and attention to detail are critical for success in this position. This position reports to the VP of Industrial Sales

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Standard Development and Responsibilities 

  • Serve as a technical resource for customers, providing guidance on product applications and troubleshooting issues in the field. 
  • Conduct line audits to ensure proper application techniques and adherence to quality standards. 
  • Manage customer technical calls by determining priority and providing timely resolutions. 
  • Develop and conduct training sessions for customers, contractors, and distributors under the direction of the VP of Industrial Sales  
  • Collaborate with the sales and R&D teams to identify new product opportunities and assist in the development, testing, and commercialization of innovative solutions. 
  • Work with the R&D lab to address and resolve product quality concerns. 
  • Assist with manufacturing process improvements by working with key stakeholders to achieve optimal performance. 
  • Maintain and strengthen customer relationships by identifying opportunities for further engagement and growth. 
  • Provide competitive market insights, including product trends, pricing strategies, and sales techniques. 
  • Support trade shows, customer events, and marketing initiatives by deploying assets and providing technical expertise. 
  • Ensure a high level of customer service by working collaboratively with internal teams, including sales, technical specialists, R&D, customer service, and production. 
  • Maintain a formal prospecting plan and work to cultivate new customer opportunities through networking, presentations, and industry involvement. 
  • Provide monthly sales pipeline updates and progress reports to the VP of Industrial Sales.

  • Establish and maintain best practices and internal controls for technical processes. 
  • Recommend and implement updates to systems and procedures for seamless operations. 
  • Drive operational performance goals through effective planning, scheduling, and process improvements.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities, with a hands-on approach to troubleshooting and resolving technical challenges. 
  • Experience working with Alkyds, Epoxies, Polyesters, Water-based, and Solvent-based coatings. 
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to follow up on multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for engaging with customers, internal teams, and leadership. 
  • Initiative-driven mindset with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues. 
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and provide effective solutions. 
  • Strong analytical thinking skills to logically break down problems and identify solutions.

Requirements

 

Experience & Education 

  • 7-10 years of experience in the paint and coatings industry, with hands-on field experience in paint application and technical problem-solving. 
  • BS/BA degree preferred, or a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience. 
  • Technical proficiency with Burke, Sierra and TCI  products is highly desirable. 
  • Willingness to travel regularly to customer sites and job locations.
